denied offering Nixon free travel to Clemson during the recruitment of her son Marsalis Basey of Mar tinsburg WVa MISC Tour de rance BORDEAUX rance The Tour de rance keeps changing leaders not favorites Pascal Lino of rance cycled to the top of the overall stand ings Tuesday after the 136 mile third stage from Pau to Bordeaux Richard Virenque of rance was 1 minute 54 sec onds behind in jersey from Virenque who snatched it Monday from Swiss rider Alex Zuelle who grabbed it from Indurain the leader after opening pro logue Three time winner Greg LeMond of the United States remained 10th overall seven minutes behind the leader NL execs highly paid Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS The re wards for going to the Super Bowl are immense even if you get blown out three times Just ask Dan Reeves coach of Denver Broncos whose sal ary doubled from 1988 to 1989 after his team had lost three Super Bowls by an aggregate total of 96 points from $425000 to $850000 That and many other nuggets emerged Tuesday as stacks of NL documents never before made public were released by lawyers at the antitrust suit by eight players against the league Information came out in dif ferent forms more from some teams less from others The Los Angeles Rams simply listed sal aries paid to and other nameless individuals including to whom the team paid $98000 in 1990 But the most consistent thing about NL salaries at the upper echelons is inconsistency par ticularly with regard to salaries And coaches even get frinee benefits when they fail New Orleans bought Bum Phill house for $364000 after he was fired Executive salaries are also in consistent Carl Peterson who turned around the Kansas City Chiefs but never got them into an AC 'title game earned just over $1 million in 1990 Jim inks who did the same in New Orleans earned $115 million And Bobby Beathard who has failed to du plicate his Washington success in San Diego got $1055 million in 1990 1 Meanwhile close friend George Young of the New 'York Giants earned $441000 that season as the team he re built over a decade won its sec ond Super Bowl although salary was graded up and down over the And Bill Polian who rebuilt a team that won eight games over three seasons in the mid and now has gone to two straight Super Bowls earned just $160000 in salary salary is more than the $759000 paid last season to Mike Ditka who won his only Super Bowl as a coach 46 10 over New England after the 1985 season And far more than the $322917 Buffalo paid Marv Levy to take the Bills to their first title game in 1990 when they lost 20 19 to the Giants as Scott Norwood missed a last second 47 yard field goal at tempt Bill Parcells who was coaching his last game for the Giants got $725500 from the Giants that season then stepped down rather than renegotiate a new seven figure contract Then Jerry Burns the ex Minnesota coach whose sal ary went from $505000 in 1988 the year before the team traded for Herschel Walker to $360000 in 1989 the year Walker was supposed to take the Vikings to the Super Bowl Mike Lynn the general manager who engi neered what is generally re garded as the worst trade in NL history also had his salary cut but from far greater heights he made $902000 in 1988 and $858000 in 1989 The highest paid coach in 1990 ironically was Jimmy Johnson of Dallas who was paid $1433 million by his old college buddy Jerry Jones That was just second year as an NL coach and followed a 1 15 year as a rookie he has been 7 9 and 11 5 the last two years helped by the bodies he got from Lynn in the Walker trade BIR rom Page problems he also knows there will be those who will have some beef about the surface going to be hard for the drivers to get used to because the only one out he said going to be different really know CUBS rom Page 1 les Dodgers voting in favor abaseball source said Cubs did not want this fight with the commissioner and regret that it has become neces Cubs chairman Stanton Cook said The Dodgers did not join the Cubs as a plaintiff Los Angeles owner Peter did not re turn telephone calls Tuesday The court papers filed by the Cubs revealed that NL president Bill White urged Vincent on June 8 to stay out of the re alignment dispute my knowledge no commis sioner has attempted much less engaged in a wholesale intru sion into the business affairs of the leagues such as you appar ently are White wrote He added that interven tion by the commissioner inflame the current divisions to such an extent that any tempo rary benefits obtained from your decision could become almost an afterthought in the acrimony and litigation that may The complaint said Atlanta Houston Montreal Pittsburgh San Diego and San rancisco were in favor of intervention by Vincent with the other clubs op posed lawsuit is not about the wisdom of any particular divi sional Cook said in a statement question here is simply whether the commis sioner has the authority to over turn the National League consti tution on a fundamental busi ness question of how the league is structured and The role of television supersta tions specifically WGN ap peared to exacerbate the contro versy Both the station and the Cubs are owned by the Tribune Co The Cubs cited Article VII of the Major League Agreement which says the commissioner can decide disputes that those whose resolution is ex pressly provided for by another means in this agreement the Major League Rules the consti tution of either Major League or the Basic Agreement between the Major Leagues and the Major League Baseball Players and I expect them to have things to say about it But I know one thing going to be a lot safer for A concrete surface has a cou ple more benefits It will be about 40 degrees cooler than as phalt and it will never change That
