Amanda D. Jones of Mercer was speeding shortly after 2:35 a.m. on Main Street in Sandy Lake when the two-door coupe she was driving went off the road, state police in the Mercer barracks said in a news release. The car went up an embankment and hit a tree before continuing over a sidewalk and striking a stone wall, state police said.

Ms. Jones was thrown from the car and was found on the front lawn of Beauty Shop, 3331 N. Main St. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Edward Covington, 56, who has addresses in East Liberty and Green Tree, faces charges of attempted homicide, rape and other crimes. District Judge Kevin Cooper increased his bail from $100,000 to $300,000 at a preliminary hearing Thursday, according to online court records. Pittsburgh police wrote in a criminal complaint that a woman told them she and Mr. Covington drank and smoked together Oct. 7 in his apartment in the 5600 block of Penn Avenue and he confronted her because he thought she went to the Pirates game with another man, an accusation she denied.

She told police Mr. Covington knocked her to the ground, shoved a towel in her mouth and raped her, according to a criminal complaint. She told officers he stopped, yelled at her again and then raped her a second time. The woman also told police she bit Mr. hand to try to get him to stop and in response he tried to strangle her with a telephone cord and threatened to kill her and her family.

While she was in jail, the father, Dean Payne, 52, was arrested on charges he endangered the welfare of their six children, ages 1 to 12.

I had dinner since mommy went to Police wrote in documents charging Ms. Persinger that they had been called to the house four times in September to check on the welfare of the children and that the 911 center had logged 17 calls to the home in the last three months for incidents ranging from fights to children running amok while their parents were passed out.
