Contrary to chants by the University of Virginia student body the Maryland Terrapins edged closer to a major post season bowl bid by defeating the Cavaliers 17 7 Saturday afternoon at Scott Stadium' Terp quarterback Tim an aspiring actor played one of two leading roles in the victory The senior signalcaller set a Maryland record with 324 total yards offense rushing for 102 yards on 14 carries and adding 222 (17 of 32) through theairways Playing the other top role for the Terps was run ning back Alvin Maddox who came off the bench to score both Maryland touchdowns The win upped the 14th ranked Terrapins to 9 1 overall 5 0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and set the stage for a showdown next week with Tigers in College Park Virginia on the other hand fell to 2 7 0 4 in the ACC ollowing the game Maryland head coach Jerry Clairborne lauded the host Wahoos who held the powerful Terp offense in check for most of the af ternoon played very tough Claiborne said shaking his head just'happy to get the winthe name of the game is winning We are proud of the way our people came None of the 19874 fans assembled on this warm fall Saturday afternoon probably imagined Claiborne would have to credit the heavily favored Terapins Simply stated what happened was a determined Virginia defense met and shut down a stalled Maryland offense Cavaliers Bryan Holoman Grant Hudson Bryan Shumock came up with one in terception apiece in the first half to shut down offensive attack To add to the Terps troubles Cavalier punter Russ Henderson continued to back them up deep in their own territory booming eight kicks for a 456 yard average Henderson an All ACC selection last year and one of the top kickers unleashed a towering 58 yarder early in the third quarter which almost brought rain It was defense that set up the go ahead score midway in the third quarter After being stopped short on a fourth and cen timeters at the Virginia 20 the Terps were forced to turn the ball over on downs But on the first play from scrimmage linebacker Neal Olkewicz swept through the line and hit Hottowe as he was receiving the handoff from quarterback Mickey Spady The ball popped loose and defensive end Brad Senft pounced on fumble at the Cavalier 21 O'Hare wasted no time in moving the Terps down to the 13 but on a third and two running back Steve Adkins was stopped short of first down yardage Loncar then tied a Maryland school record with his 15th field goal of the season to put the Terps out front 10 7 The score remained 10 7 until late in the fourth quarter when Maryland appeared to be headed for Duke Dumps Wake 3 0 On Second rame Kick By GALEN TRUSSELL Sports Writer DURHAM NC Early Saturday morning skies here promised nothing but a miserable day ahead however by noon all the clouds were gone and the sun came out with a promise for a perfect day of football Too bad the promise never came true The Blue Devils of Duke University outlasted the Demon Deacons of Wake orest 3 0 in what had to be the most unexciting game in college football Saturday Both teams showed a rare abiltity to cough up the football whenever approaching the goaline It was a day for punters and even their performances could only be tagged mediocre Duke head coach Mike McGee was also tightlipped about his suspension of four players from the Duke squad McGee refused to comment on a meeting he has planned with the players for Monday morning He also refused to speculate about his future as the Duke coach Thursday McGee announced he had placed reserve quarterback Stanley Driskell tailback Greg Rhett split end Derrick Lewis and Marvin Brown on in definite suspension for detrimental to the best interests of the The Durham Herald reported the players were suspended after they called an underclassman meeting At the meeting the suspended players supposedly blamed McGee for lukewarm record this season Duke in posting the 3 0 win recorded its first shutout since 1974 It that the Blue Devils defense was so great it was that the Wake offense ''was so inconsistent Duke did come up with some good defensive plays late in the game and set up Ricky Brummitt's 24 yard boot with an interception half way through the second quarter Turnovers provided the only real excitment as Wake quarterbacks Davis Webber and Landon King (who made his first start of the year) were in tercepted four times Wake fumbled three times and lost them all Duke lost a pair of fumbles In the first half neither team could convert for more than one first down on any possession: Wake recovered the first turnover as A Martin fumbled after a short run The series of plays which set up field goal is a good example of how the rest of the game went: Early in the second quarter Deacon Wayne Mc Millan fumbled and Carl McGee recovered for the See DUKE Page 14 Lewis Has Big Night But Tech Blows Early Lead To lorida St By LORRAINE CICHOWSKI Associated Press Writer TALLAHASSEE la (AP) Running backs Mark Lyles and Homes Johnson carried the offense Saturday night as lorida State pulled out a 24 14 victory over Virgina Tech Johnson's 3 yard touchdown with 10:20 to go in the fourth quarter gave SU the lead and Lyles added a 1 yard touchdown run with 1:54 left run followed a scoreless third quarter and capped a 66 yard 11 play SU drive second 1 yard touchdown came after nose guard Ron Simmons recovered a fumble attheir 4 yard line The Seminoles eyeing a bowl bid climbed to 6 3 while Virginia Tech fell to 3 7 with its fourth straight loss Tech ended 11 straight scoreless quarters in the second period on a 57 yard run by Kenny Lewis who has 10 of the 17 touchdowns this season 5 Quarterback Steve Casey followed with a 5 yard scoring pass to Paul Watkins Eric King added the extra points giving Tech a 14 3 lead plunge from six inches out with five seconds in the half cut the Tech lead to 14 10 Johnson a sophomore tailback ran for 152 yards on 27 attempts while senior fullback Lyles gained 79 yards on 16 attempts Lewis gained 126 yards in 19 attempts to lead Virginia Tech Dave Cappelen a junior placekicker who is closing in on a pair of school records opened scoring on a 37 yard field goal with three minutes left in the first quarter Cappelen now has 27 career field goals one short of the school record held by Grant Guthrie of the 1957 59 team Cappelen has scored 153 points three short of the scoring record SU has lost three top players for the season They are defensive back Ivory Joe Hunter out with a broken leg and offensive tackle Lee Adams and linebacker Paul Piurowski who have undergone recent knee surgery SU needs to defeat Navy and lorida in their next two games to insure consideration for a bowl game The Seminoles won the Tangerine Bowl last year with a good comeback after the battle But he did Return specialist Sean McCall electrified the partial crowd on the opening kickoff catching Ed Loncar's boot at his own goal line and rambling 85 yards to the Maryland 15 giving the Cavaliers ex cellent field position Then running back Tommy Vigorito ran straight ahead for five yards and Dan Hottowe took the ball up the middle for seven more to give Virginia a first down on the 3 yard line On the next play Hottowe a two year letterman out of Bothell Wash bulled ahead for the touchdown to give the Wahoos a surprising 6 0 lead Russ PAT kick went through the uprights and the Cavaliers enjoyed a 7 0 margin with less than two minutes gone in the opening quarter On its first possession the Terps managed to move another score Taking the ball on their own 20 the Terps behind O'Hare and Maddox marched down to the Virginia 18 yard line But on the next play defensive back Derrick Glasper tied a Cavalier school record with his 11th career interception and the Wahoos were back in business The clock showed less than two minutes left and Virginia went into its last minute offense ailing to move the ball much on their first three plays the Wahoos elected to go for the first down on a fourth and six on the 24 However the last ditch attempt was abruptly stopped when reserve quarterback Chip Mark was sacked at the 14 by a fierce Maryland rush Taking over on downs the Terps took only three plays to score its final points Mattox racked up the touchdown on a 4 yard run around the left end Loncar was again good on the PAT and Maryland had down to their own 46 but were forced to punt when a third down pass was deflected by Virginia defensive back Tony Blount After holding the Cavs on the next series of plays Maryland the co leader along with Clemson moved 66 yards in 14 plays to knot the score at 7 7 skillfully directed the well executed drive its 17 7 margin too bad that our players got a 17 7 ball game for their lamented Virginia head coach Dick Bestwick afterwards nice thing about a lot of those players you saw out there will be back for two or three more years We knew before the game if we have any fumbles interceptions and penalties firing four completions and scrambling out of the pocket twice for first down yardage Maddox capped the drive on a second and goal from the Virginia two when he bounced off the right side to score PAT kick was good and the ACC matchup was deadlocked at 7 all with 4 24 left to play in the first period A tie score in the opening quarter failed to raise any eyebrows but want happened the final 45 minutes was by any measure cause for wonder we could be a winner showed we could move the ball right at them Our game plan was to run right at them a team you get around the corners O'Hare who was intercepted three times by Cavalier defenders said he was confused by the Virginia defensive setup took out inside game he said have to give them a lot of credit They were switching defenses a jumping in and out all day Staff Photo bv Bill Selliff Scott McKinney kicks Duke's winning 25 yard field Ervin (35) and Marc Hester (48) try in vain to block it goal during second quarter as Wake George
