Dec 06 2013 Post-Gazette PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE 7, 2013 WWW.POST-GAZETTE.COM A-12 A-12 SOUTH Three men sentenced in McKeesport arsons An Allegheny County judge has sentenced three men for starting fires in vacant houses in McKeesport last year. James Rocco, Corey Sease and James Langer Jr. confessed to their roles in four arsons on Forest and East streets that destroyed three vacant houses in Fawcett plan, according to police affidavits. The house on Forest was struck twice. The three pleaded guilty in September to charges of arson, conspiracy and reckless endangerment.

Common Pleas Judge Joseph K. Williams III on Wednesday sentenced Rocco, 26, of McKeesport, to nine to 18 months in jail plus 20 years of probation. Sease, 23, of North Versailles, received six to 12 months in jail and 10 years of probation. Langer, 25, of McKeesport, got one year of house arrest and 20 years of probation. Langer also is required to get mental health evaluation and treatment.

NORTH Second body this week found in Moraine State Park A kayaker on Thursday discovered the body of a man in Moraine State Park in Butler County, the second body found there this week, park officials said Friday. Bryan Moore, the ranger supervisor, identified the man as Alvah Strick- enburg III, 43, formerly of New Castle. Mr. Strickenburg on Monday left the Hillsville house he was staying in after he and his former girlfriend had a fight, Mahoning police Chief James Morris said. The kayaker saw his body lying on the north shore of Lake Arthur near the McDanels Boat Launch, Mr.

Moore said. On Tuesday, the body of Nicholas Sopel, 62, of Lyndora, was found in Lake Arthur by staff using an underwater camera donated by his family. He had been missing since mid-November, a park official said. Butler County office officials could not be reached for comment. CITY Date set for motions in cyanide poisoning case No trial date has yet been set, but the case against the University of Pittsburgh researcher accused of killing his wife with cyanide is moving forward.

Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey A. Manning on Friday set Feb. 10 as the date to hear motions in the case. A trial date will presumably be set after that. Robert Ferrante, 65, is charged with killing his wife, Autumn Klein, 41, who was the chief of the division of neurology at UPMC.

She died April 20 three days after, police said, Mr. Ferrante poisoned her. At a pretrial conference Friday morning, Judge Manning signed an order allowing Mr. Ferrante to have access to a laptop computer at the Allegheny County Jail so he can review his discovery material. Also, assistant district attorney Lisa Pellegrini told the court she provided several CDs and an external hard drive to the defense this morning and anticipates providing more information, still outstanding in a search warrant to Google, by early January.

A total of 63 search warrants were issued in the case, Ms. Pellegrini said. When asked by Judge Manning if he anticipated the defense filing any motions to either move the trial or bring in a jury from elsewhere, attorney William Difenderfer said he had not yet made a decision, but that he would prefer a local panel. Overbrook brothers not guilty of attempted murder An Allegheny County jury delivered a split verdict in a shooting earlier this year outside the Capital Grille in Downtown Pittsburgh. The jury found Antonio Peterson, 25, and his 23-year-old brother, Hassan Howze, of Overbrook not guilty of attempted murder in the shooting of Jamel Terry on Fifth Avenue April 5.

But after deliberating Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, the panel of eight women and four men found both men guilty of other charges against them, including recklessly endangering another person. Mr. Howze was additionally found guilty of aggravated assault and Mr. Peterson was found guilty of illegally possessing a firearm. Sentencing is set for Feb.

28. Both defendants testified that what happened that afternoon started out as a fistfight. Based on surveillance video that captured most of the incident, it did start out as a fight. According to the prosecution, when Mr. Peterson started to lose the fight, his brother pulled a gun he was legally licensed to carry and first tried to pistol-whip Mr.

Terry. There was a tussle over the weapon, and police said Mr. Howze fired at Mr. Terry. Mr.

Terry suffered a grazing bullet wound to his back and Mr. Howze was shot in the groin. Meteorologist Brad Rehak of the National Weather Service in Moon said the storm pushed off to the east overnight, leaving the area with a mostly cloudy day and a high of 28 today, a low of 15 tonight, and the possibility of snow changing to sleet by Sunday evening, with a high of 32 and little chance of additional shoveling. now it looks like the system is going to be Mr. Rehak said.

not calling for any Even without much accumulation, the wintry mix caused roadway chaos across Allegheny County for several hours Friday night, with several dozen drivers crashing into houses, roadway barriers, walls, ditches and other vehicles, according to county officials. In all, nearly 30 car accidents were reported between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. At least four cars flipped over, temporarily trapping their drivers and injuring several people badly enough for them to be sent to local hospitals, according to county police who could not specify how many people were injured or which accidents they were involved in. Several utility poles were knocked down by sliding cars, ripping down live electric lines in several cases.

One such accident closed streets in Reserve around Allen Drive and Mount Troy Road, while Becks Run Road was closed because of icy conditions and the 1400 block of North State Street in Clairton was closed temporarily because of a vehicle that rolled over. A winter weather advisory was in effect all day for Western Pennsylvania, including areas east of Pittsburgh that were not previously included. The original forecast called for 2 to 5 inches of accumulation, but was later revised to 4 to 6 inches because the storm tracked farther south than previously expected. Around the region, some employees headed into afternoon rush hour a little earlier than usual, hoping to beat the freeze, and stoked traffic as a result. In at least one case, they left early at the urging of their employer.

Bishop David Zubik of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh took over the building- wide intercom at the Downtown headquarters at around 3:45 p.m. and urged staff members to leave as soon as possible for safety reasons, according to a spokesperson for the diocese. He led a brief prayer for safe travel. Amy McConnell Schaarsmith: 412-263-1719 or aschaar- Lexi Belculfine contributed.
