superintendent of largest school district and his wife are opening their home to a 17 year old Guatemalan immigrant after her parents were forced to leave the US because they in the country legally Jennifer Galdames was a year and a half from grad uating high school when her stepfather and mother were detained in October while dropping off her sister at school The Des Moines Register reported stepfather was detained for deportation to his home country of Mexico mother was per mitted to voluntarily return to Guatemala with Jenni 8 year old sister Her biological father was killed in Guatemala years earlier due to the violence that has sent many fleeing north Jennifer applied for legal residency by seeking Special Immigrant Juvenile Status Her mother planned to send her to a relative in New Jersey but Jennifer want to leave Iowa So Des Moines Schools Superin tendent Tom Ahart and his wife Jami Bassman Ahart i 'f Imk? jbM offered to take her in and serve as her temporary legal guardians so she can com plete her high school degree Jami Bassman Ahart said she and Tom had much to share and much love to keep to The Aharts are newly weds who Eve in Des Moines with their 6 year old son Jami Bassman Ahart was connected with Jen mother through a mutual acquaintance and helped the family navigate contacting the jail where stepfather was detained Jami had collected supplies for the family when she learned that Jennifer want to move to New Jersey She consulted with Tom who agreed with the plan to welcome Jennifer into their home The Aharts signed and notarized papers with Jen mother declaring them her temporary legal guardians They also con tacted the pro bono immigration lawyer to work on lawful resi dence status Jennifer crossed the bor der alone three years ago Her mother arranged for a coyote or smuggler to escort her to the border in 2014 She was apprehended by border officials after cross ing into Texas and spent a night in a detention center Her mother had contacted a lawyer who got Jennifer out of the detention center Jennifer then boarded a bus to Iowa Her parents pursue legal status as an option even though her younger sister is a US citizen by birth But Jennifer can file for Special Immigrant Juve nile Status with the US Citizenship and Immigra tion Services Ajudge deter mines the special status based on findings of abuse neglect or abandonment A judge must rule that return ing to a country of origin or being reunited with par ents is not in the best interest If that status is approved Jennifer must wait another five years before she can apply for citi zenship She currently eligible to work or receive a license until she has legal resident status Jami Bassman Ahart gave Jennifer a phone so that she can contact her mother in Guatemala The Aharts also launched an online fundraiser to help with Jennifers college sav ings raised more than $4000 toward the $10000 goal Tom Ahart said he wants Jennifer to have the same opportunities as his son NTSB says train was going more than twice speed limit when it wrecked LUZ LAZO ASHLEY HALSEY III WASHINGTON POST The National Transportation Safety Board says the train that derailed Monday as it made its way from Seattle to Portland was going more than twice the posted speed limit when it jumped the tracks on a bridge over a busy interstate highway indications are that the train was travel ing 80 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour said NTSB member Bella Dinh Zarr At least three people were killed and more than 100 injured when one of two engines and 12 cars derailed many of them tumbling onto a busy interstate highway below Cranes moved in to clear the damaged cars from Inter state 5 one of the busiest highways on the West Coast which remained closed during morning com mute NTSB officials said that investigators have not yet spo ken with the train crew and they were uncertain whether the crew was familiar with the speed limits in the zone The train was making its
