v. MvricWi marble works. Broadway be- and 't'eoih streera. FASHIONS LOS ANGELES, Feb. lg (By United Press).

A queer cavalcade wended its way up the busy streets of Los Angeles. Jt consisted of three burros and a white-bearded, aged man. The man was Ernest Brandt, for twenty-five years a hermit living in the Mount Wilson hills. During the entire time he had never come into the city. Brandt lived in his Sierra Madre cabin and was satisfied.

This winter, however, the deep snows drove him down to the milder valley below. He packed his earthly belongings On his three apathetic-looking burros and came to Iajs Angelas. The countjrcharltles found him. The charities were willing to feed Brandt, but not his burros. There are too many hungry humans who must be cared for first, they explained.

The old man said not a word. Head up, he walked to the street, where his three "mountain canaries" with their ungainly packs were the center of a curious crowd. He led them away. Brandt didn't just know where he was going. But he knew that wherever It was, It would be sqrne place where he wouldn't have to' desert his three long-earned1 friends.

Providence, or whatever it is that takes care.of men and burros and things when they are especially forlorn, but still hold up their heads, must have seen the odd little caravan. For it went across an" intersection directly in the way of a well-to-do business man's automobile. The man was in a hurry. He honked impatiently -at the plodding procession. Brandt looked up.

The three burros are staked out -on grassy-slope -at Rose Hill -now, eating to their hearts' content and stomachs' capaoltj. Their master is sitting on the front steps of a house nearby It is. now his home talking over boyhood days with the business man. Brandt now has a home for the rest of the winter. The Good Hamarltan has a chum of other days to talk to.
