De fending champion Jon Sinclair sprinted past Mark Curp about 80 yards from the finish line to win the Virginia Ten Miler Saturday It was the third Virginia Ten Miler victory for Sinclair who led a field of 3000 runners first victory was in 1982 Sinclair is the third three time winner in the Ten Miler Bill Rodgers won four straight years Central lorida downs Bucs BRAD LIORD Sportswriter JOHNSON CITY The University of Central lorida was handing out a sample of Division II football Saturday at Memorial Center but it was not a free sam ple The East Tennessee State football team were takers and they paid for it dearly Quarterback Shane Willis completed 19 of 38 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown to lead the Knights to a 23 17 win over the Buccaneers as ETSU dropped its second straight game and fell to 2 2 Central lorida which is ranked No 2 in the Division II poll kept their record perfect at 4 0 The Bucs simply fell behind too much too early as Central lorida jumped out to a 17 0 lead midway through the second quar ter But ETSU head coach Don Riley was one person not sur prised at the perfor mance against his team which is in Division AA watching the pre game films coming into the game I was aware of their skills and their Riley said "And unfortunately I was right about them hard to be 17 points down to a good football team and come back and win They had a better football team than us and they whipped Riley was impressed by the elusive Willis and the effect he had on the ETSU defensive squad "When we blitzed we get there and when we were in a zone we didn't get Riley said "He (Willis) is a very accu rate player and he's very mo The southpaw quarterback VOLS I Bucs fall to 2 2 after 23 17 setback for their second straight loss threw two interceptions one to cornerback Rick Harris his fifth pickoff of the year Yet it was Willis' scrambling ability that left ETSU pass rushers frustrated and the defensive backfield work ing overtime did a good job picking out the weak points in our de said left cornerback Juan McGarrah was doing a good job moving out of the pocket from the pass rush and his receivers were just breaking off and getting The Bucs' ship really started sinking in the third quarter when Willis completed a 19 yard pass to wide receiver Sean Beckton to put the Knights up 23 14 ETSU's of fense stalled the rest of the way with the Knights allowing only a late field goal to hold on for the win The Knights did not wait long to show what kind of af ternoon it would be Willis hit the Bucs with a se ries of short passes early in the first quarter and tailback Gilbert Barnes scored the game's first points when he ran off tackle three yards into the endzone Travis Al extra point kick was good giving the a 7 0 lead The Knights struck again late in the quarter when Mark Gia cone capped an 86 yard drive with a four yard touchdown run Al kick gave the Knights' a 14 0 lead On the ensuing kickoff Mar lon Holmes rambled 22 yards on the return before fumbling to the Knights' Shawn Jefferson The drive was stalled by two penalties but Allen connected for a 30 yard field goal to make the score 17 0 The Bucs' offense which had been held virtually motionless by a furious Central lorida pass rush got untracked when quar terback Randy Meredith com pleted four of five passes to drive the team from ETSU's 22 to the 24 Meredith hit running back George Searcy who led ETSU with 48 yards rushing on just seven carries over the middle for a 24 yard touchdown Wayland extra point kick made the score 17 7 The offense ignited once again in the second half when Riley put in back up quar terback Mark Williams but the sparks were of short duration On fifth play of the game from the ETSU 24 he con nected over the middle with wide receiver Rodney Jones for a 76 yard touchdown to bring the Bucs within three points at 17 14 Willis hit Beckton for the 19 yard touchdown on the next series however making the score 23 14 with six minutes left in the third quarter And Williams who finished 9 for 23 for 203 yards was ineffec tive for much his stint as the Knights' defense began yielding yards only late in the game Shamburger kicked a 34 yard field goal to make the score 23 17 with 1:08 to go but the Knights merely held the football when an onsides kick by ETSU failed Bucs move next to Chattanooga to play the Univer sity of Tennessee Chattanooga "We
