RACES Page 12A Proposal may quell merit pay argument Associated Press NASHVILLE A commission overseeing the merit pay program helped riday to quell a dispute with the Tennessee Education Association over release of teacher evaluation materials The Interim Certification Commission rec ommended a personal interview with teachers seeking the bonuses be dropped from the eval uation process And panel members also suggested that a panel of teachers meet to revise the importance placed on a portfolio of materials teachers sub mit when trying to become eligible for the bo nuses of up to $7000 annually The commission's recommendations must be approved by the state Board of Education which plans to meet later this month The portfolio and interview are two tools for state evaluators to decide which teachers are qualified for the new Career Ladder of merit pay The TEA representing 39000 of the state's 46000 public school teachers has been passing out ratings scales for the interviews and portfo lios to teachers who attend workshops aimed at preparing them for the evaluations The scales are considered confidential by the commission which issued a warning to TEA to stop releasing them
