operate as Na tional Raceways Carrier said he paid between $45 million and $5 million for the stock The Bristol racing complex was developed and built in 1960 by Carrier and his former partner state Sen Carl Moore Bristol They sold the raceway in 1978 and it changed hands a few times be fore California businessman Warner Hodgdon acquired full ownership in 1983 under the Na tional Raceways name Hodgdon hired Carrier as BIR general man ager BIR was placed in Chapter 11 bankruptcy in ebruary 1983 when Hodgdon had financial problems unrelated to the opera tion at BIR Carrier was ap pointed by a California federal court judge to continue in his ca pacity as general manager at BIR Now that BIR is again his Carrier has named Denny Dar nell publicity director for the past two years to serve as vice president and general man ager of the raceway Carrier said Darnell will also continue to serve as a media contact At the same time he bought BIR Carrier said he sold Bristol International Dragway to More head Ky businessman and drag racer Jim Ruth for an undisclosed amount of money Ruth will be the sole operator of the dragway which will continue to be known under the same name said Car rier The dragstrip was not sold to finance the purchase of National Raceway stock and BIR Carrier said reason for selling the dragway was real simple with Carrier explained feel like that no sanctioning body par ticularly drag racing should own a race track I feel like unfair to the other tracks and as a sanc tioning body we need to treat all of them IHRA sanctions 11 national drag meets each year nationwide including the Spring Nationals and all Nationals in Bristol Both Bristol drag races will con tinue to be sanctioned by IHRA which has a long term contract with BID Carrier said plan to do a lot of im provements with the raceway here and I plan on keeping said Carrier who added that a multi year renovation project is already under way at BIR the next four years see a lot of im The metal guardrails at each end of the 533 mile oval track at BIR are being removed and re placed with 1600 feet of reinforced concrete walls four feet high and one foot thick The walls are being added to prevent races from being stopped in order to weld the guardrails every time a stock car collides with them Carrier said A new 5000 seat grandstand is being built and new concessions and restrooms are planned All existing buildings at the raceway are being reroofed and refur bished Also under construction is a media building and in the fourth turn of the racetrack a stand Weather permitting most of the changes should be finished in time for the first weekend of rac ing on April 5 6 when the Bud weiser 200 and the Valleydale Meats 500 are scheduled Im provements at BIR this year alone will cost about $200000 Ruth has many im provements planned for the drag way Carrier said Another big change at BIR in 1986 is the addition of a 200 lap All American Challenge Race sanctioned by NASCAR and a
