Lexington Ky on Thursday indi cated that 530 workers at two Buchanan County mines would be laid off beginning Mon day according to re ports The officials indi cated that 280 workers would be laid off Thursday reported finding a large piece of debris believed to be part of the fuselage of the space shuttle Challenger and said parts of the cock pit appear to be floating on the Atlantic Ocean The VINCENT SINGLETON Staff Writer Larry Carrier is once again the owner of Bristol International Raceway after purchasing this week all stock in the financially troubled corporation which had owned the racing complex In making the announcement on Thursday Carrier founder and president of the Bristol based International Hot Rod Association which sanctions major and minor drag racing events nationwide also said he has sold Bristol Interna tional Dragway of this past Monday I was able to buy the stock back for the Bristol raceway and dragway and pay everybody off and (I) am now the sole owner of the Once again new vice the owner president of BIR manager Assembly fills 29th 30th circuit judgeships KATHY STILL Wise County Bureau The Virginia General Assem bly has chosen lawyers from Bu chanan County and Norton to fill the 29th and 30th Circuit Court judgeships respectively Buchanan County attorney Don McGlothlin Jr was ap pointed Wednesday to replace re tiring Judge Glyn Phillips in the 29th Circuit Phillips 62 served on the bench for 18 years Norton lawyer Robert Winston received the approval of the General Assembly to replace retiring Judge MM Long Jr retirement becomes effec tive today He served on the bench for 27 years The two appointments were not surprising because McGloth lin and Winston were the favorites for the positions In fact Winston had received the nomination of the House Democratic caucus on Monday McGlothlin 37 who has sub stituted as judge for nine years said Thursday he is looking at the appointment as a reason I am happy is because going to get to work with the system of justice because I have held it dearly ever since I can remember" he said McGlothlin who said he is scheduled to report to work on Monday said he is busy wrap ping up his law practice before being sworn in eight year term will begin on Saturday but a date for his swearing in has not been set Winston isn't sure how long it will take him to wind up his law practice The two Bristol pastor says SUSAN CAMERON Staff Writer is the word used by Bristol Virginia minister Lester MacKinnon to describe a liquor bill before the General Assembly which would allow the sale of mixed drinks in the city without voter approval while local lawyer Jim Bowie said he prepared the bill in the name of needed economic de velopment The bill sponsored by Del James Robinson Pound would mean Bristol Virginia citizens would not have to cross State Street into their sister city to buy a drink The bill was approved by a House committee Wednes day and if given final appro val the sale of mixed drinks would not require referendums in each of the four cities that are dry In addition to Bristol those cities are Galax Buena Vista and Manassas Park A referendum however would still be required in counties and towns Bristol minister Lester MacKinnon called the bill "sneaky because no one was aware of it" In three mixed beverages referenda in Bristol held in 1972 1976 and 1983 the
