Occluded Stationary A storm blasting across the northern Plains and upper Mississippi Valley spread light snow and gusty winds Wednes day across the Midwest while freezing temperatures hit lorida Snow ranged from the Dakotas to Wis consin and northern Illinois and from Michigan to Ohio and Kentucky Winds up to 35 mph dropped wind chills Into the 20 below to 40 below zero range in the northern Johnson City Meece said Lebanon Va re ported several additional inches of snow while further north in Grundy it was raining by af ternoon Meece said Rick Mitchell weatherman said the snow Wednesday was strange" He said it takes a sense of humor to forecast the unpredictable weather you need to get out of the business People on the street sometimes like to say we missed it even when we get it right just to have a good time We do miss it once in a Mitchell said the snow grazed the northern part of the Tri Cities and he expected it to move out of the area possibly by midnight high tempera Mona Doss said the department had a problem with some motorists abandoning their cars on snow and ice packed roads have just stopped in the middle of the she said Several tractor trailers jack knifed on Interstate 81 and the department advised the use of snow tires and chains The worst stretch of highway was away Racing is well and alive at Bristol and will continue to be so for many years to BIR officials will also an nounce Thursday that the Bristol racing complex will undergo major multi year renovation pro said Darnell as well as the addition of another to racing program next year He said the renovations will make the raceway of the most picturesque and most com raceways in the country Despite rumors the raceway might be sold BIR had one of the best seasons in its 25 years of op eration last year Rain postponed the Valley dale Meats 500 by one week and threatened to cancel the Busch 500 in August but the two events had some of the largest crowds in track history Attendance at the two major drag racing events of the year were also up substan tially state Route 58 from Abingdon to Damascus Ms Doss said About 10 fender benders were reported in Sullivan County Tenn and roads were icy and slu shy by afternoon said a dis patcher A spokesman for the Virginia State Police said some drivers were sliding off snow covered roads although interstate traffic was moving slowly The Tennes see Highway Patrol reported about 25 minor accidents and was advising the use of snow tires and chains In Smyth County light traf fic was reported and snow tires and chains were a must The Lee County Department re ported no accidents Roads were snow covered but passable said a department spokesman In Wise County several inches of new snow fell for a total accumulation of about six inches By afternoon Johnson City roads were generally clear but slick in spots and the weather changed from snow to rain all day said Dispatcher Tonyah Gwyn of the Police Department The Kingsport Police Department reported about five minor acci dents Snow had stopped falling there at about 2:30 pm and roads were slushy said Cpl Ron Epper son Bad road conditions meant the closing of nearly all public
