"SAM" After fighting a short, courageous battle with cancer, Samuel Caruso, age 84, formerly of Carrick, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Sam was preceded in death by his dearly loved wife, Sophie (Antzas) Caruso; parents, Enrico and Clara (DiSalvo) Caruso; brother, Alfred Caruso; and sister, Elvira Fess. He is survived by three children and two stepchildren. Butch is also survived by one brother; three sisters; many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Butch will also be missed by his two dogs, Casey Mae and Baby. He served in the Army, being stationed in Germany, in 1965 during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Port Authority of Allegheny County and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and sports fan.

Until his retirement he was an Advisory Engineer at Westinghouse Electric's Science and Technology Center and later Northrop Grumman. His professional work focused on using computers to model and analyze complex physical situations for engineering applications. During his career Larry led internationally recognized research on plasma physics, artificial intelligence and computer simulations. He coauthored the book "Plasma Reactor Engineering," wrote numerous papers and book chapters and is the holder of two U.S. Patents.

Throughout his lifetime Larry was also a dedicated model railroader and railroad historian. He was an active member of the National Model Railroad Association achieving Master Model Rail Roader status in 2012. His work won numerous modeling awards including a national "First Place Freight Car" in 1977. Larry wrote frequently on both modeling and railroad history including the book Postwar Freight Car Fleet" co-authored with Ted Culotta. Larry was particularly dedicated to the preservation of railroad history, volunteering his time at the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical Historical Society Archives in Lewistown, PA.

He was also the Vice President of the Historical Society and editor of its magazine for many Roader status in 2012.
