Jake was born July 17, 1946 and raised in Squirrel Hill, where he was a legendary baseball pitcher at Taylor Allderdice High School. As a junior in 1965 he was the team captain and M.V.P. Jake went on to play in the Federation League, and then at Point Park College on a baseball scholarship. His accomplishments from the mound were many, most notably on October 8, 1965 when he pitched the first no hitter in the history of Point Park College, leading his team to a 6-0 victory.

Jake pitched with what Coach Frank Gustine called a blazing fastball, snapping curve and effective change up. In 1969 and 1970, he played in the Tri-State College Baseball Coaches Association All Star team games at Forbes Field. After leaving Point Park, Jake played for the Monroeville Maulers from 1969-1976 and for the Salem Warlocks from 1998-2009. He was inducted in the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in May 2011. He worked at the family leading his team to a 6-0 victory.

He was born in Pittsburgh on March 10, 1929. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. in Engineering and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in West Germany during the Korean War. During his career, George worked for both Jones and Laughlin Steel and Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel.

He was a founding member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church in Pittsburgh. George was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Otillia; wife, Mary; and brother, James. He will be deeply missed by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Schmitt and Lisa Kohler Schmitt; brother, Robert (Kathryn) Schmitt and sister, Mary Killgallon, both of Pittsburgh; sister-in-law, Henrietta Schmitt; and grandchildren, Andrew, Peter, and Erika Schmitt; and many nieces and nephews. SMITH FUNERAL HOME CREMATORY Blawnox Send condolences at SMITH JOSEPH "JOE" HOUSEMAN, JR. 67, passed away in Seattle, WA, on January 23, 2012, from complications of treatments for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Joe was born in Pittsburgh, PA on December 1, 1944 to Joseph Houseman Smith and Margaret Flemming Smith. He grew up in Ben Avon, PA graduating from Avonworth High School in 1962. Joe was an excellent athlete, earning all-state honors in football and basketball.

He also competed in swimming and golf. He went on to attend Parsons College in Fairfield, IA, earning a BA in business administration in 1966. Graduating during the height of the Vietnam War, Joe enlisted with the Marine Corps. and spent a year in Vietnam as a supply officer. When he returned in 1968, he and Judy were married and spent a year at Marine Corps.

headquarters in Washington, DC as a Captain. After three years in the Marine Joe went to work for Westinghouse in Pittsburgh in the field of contracts and purchasing. In 1972, Joe, Judy, and their two sons moved to Richland, WA. Joe continued to work for Westinghouse Hanford for the rest of his career. He left Westinghouse after 27 years and continued working as a contractor for Battelle and Bechtel Corporation.

He then retired to play his beloved game of golf and travel. Joe was a kind, considerate and honorable man. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He loved his life and everyone in it. He wore his family's nickname of "PJ," which stood for "Papa Joe" with pride and a wide smile.

He will be deeply missed. He is survived by Judy, his wife of 43 years; son Joe and wife Suzanne and their children, Bonnie and Drew, of Raleigh, NC; son Brian and wife Nichole and their children, Ryland and Kaiah, of Marina Del Rey, CA; sister, Sandra Smith of Pittsburgh, PA; and brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Ann Arnold of Greenwood, SC.
