DAVID HALSTEAD THS Assistant TODAY'S 'C v'r fj fDfDlK Bristol Herald Courier A Wednesday Novembers 1981 Confrontation Will Pit Brother Against Brother BILL HALSTEAD VHS Assistant MR 4W4 )LW Ji By STEVE BAWDEN Executive Sports Editor Tennessee High vs Virginia War Between The brother against brotherJiterally Bill Halstead Jr and his younger brother David epit omize the annual extravaganza As part of a city divided this week Bill is an assistant coach at Virginia High and David is an assistant at Tennessee High week is always an emotional thing just the way it Bill said with family being involved even more The brother vs brother situation came about when David accepted a position with THS Bill had been a coach and teacher at Virginia High several years prior This will be the fourth time the two have faced each other in the clash When gametime arrives at 8 pm riday night neither will have much time to think much about sibling rivalries aware Bill is on the other side but it really a big David said first year was the only time I really thought about surprisingly I think about him being over Bill said of us work hard to do a good job in the areas we coach You get caught up in the game and have time to think about much else when it's all over the first person I want to see other than my What do you say to your brother at a time like that espe cially when the winner as Bill was last year? can be a little awkward finding the right he admitted long as been in it aware of the empti ness and the hurt when you come out on the short end of the stick There is no rubbing it Naturally both take some ribbing from their fellow coaches about the situation There have been times when the two coaching staffs were not on the best of terms The schools went for years without exchanging game films With Larry Lusk now at the VHS helm tensions have eased there was a difference in David ad mitted and I were kind of caught in the middle kind of tough when you hear people talking about another group as a whole and your brother is a member of that group You want to say I know one person whose not like and I were both hoping to keep things a little calm between the two Bill recalled Larry as head coach there has been a change in Bill and David were star athletes under their father Bill Sr at John Battle High School so very familiar with week really David said even bigger than a homecoming game We used to come down every year and walk through the schools looking at the banners actually a part of it all you really under stand Bill coaches offensive backs and linebackers for VHS David coaches receivers defensive ends and punters for THS Both have a healthy respect for one another real Daivd said pull for each other i Like if I see a Virginia High linebacker make a good hit it gives me a feeling of pride that Bill coaches him also very competitve I want his people to play well but I want Tennessee High to win the Both have good things to say about the team See BROTHERS Page 16 ingers Gets Girls Basketball John Battle Takes Cy Young Win Over Abingdon Hogoheegee Dunking Is A Gift or Bucs' Mikell Cumberland Top Twenty Cy Young Voting 3rd 2nd
