Raceway changed hands late last week when former owner Larry Carrier sold the property to California businessman Warner Hodgdon and Nashville tax attorney Gary Baker Hodgdon and Baker who are equal partners in Bristol In ternational Raceway had been negotiating with Carrier for several months with hopes of acquiring the property as a means of accommodating future expansion of the 533 mile oval which is the site of two NASCAR Winston Cup events each year Long range plans involve expanding the racing surface to a mile in length and increasing the present seating capacity to an estimated 50000 The announced attendance for the recent Valleydale 500 was in the neighborhood of 30000 Although neither party divulged the exact amount in volved the price tag on the deal was estimated to have been in excess of $2 million The property other than the quarter mile drag strip in cluded Thunder Valley Showgrounds Thunder Valley Stables and a strip of land directly behind the grandstands on the south west side of the speedway In a related deal Hodgdon took a step toward becoming one of the most influential figures in motor racing when he pur chased a block of stock in the International Hot Rod Association of which Carrier is president Carrier still owns the controlling interest in the drag rac ing sanctioning body which he founded and has its offices at Thunder Valley Dragway State Sen Carl Moore who is a part owner of the complex will retain his interests and remain as a stock holder in the com pany which operates the sanctioning body and the dragway The new owners agreed to give the sanctioning body life time use of the current IHRA offices and use the IHRA sanction for all races run at the Bristol drag strip There will be no change in events scheduled this year at either the dragway or showgrounds Also Carrier will be able to use the show barn at the complex and he intends to transform it into a boxing gym to be used as the base of operations for the newly formed Tri City Boxing Association Since purchasing the dragway the new owners have al ready started work on installing a lauching at the staring line which has been chewed up through years of use Prior to the Thunder Valley acquisition which is his first venture into drag racing Hodgdon bought half interests in BIR and Nashville International Raceway from Baker plus inter ests in the NASCAR racing ovals at Richmond Va 'and North Wilkesboro NC in the past year The Californian already owned the controlling interest in the 1609 kilometer speedway at Phoenix Ariz which has hosted events for Indy type cars Reds needed to keep him this year for his hitting He guessed wrong The Reds traded Nolan to the Baltimore Orioles riday for a pair of minor leaguers sending the 30 year old catcher packing for the American League for the first time in his career Although Nolan had heard trade rumors for several days he said he thought the Reds were going to keep him because of his 300 hitting since he signed with the Reds as a free agent in June 1980 fact that I was traded with two full time catchers Alex Trevino and Mike O'Berry besides third baseman Johnny Bench The Reds ac quired Trevino in the off season for his defense and made him the first string catcher ahead of Nolan who is not considered as adept as Trevino in throwing out baserunners looks like going to go strictly with pitching and defense and see how far it's going to carry Nolan said The tr ide also opens a spot on the roster for another piayer presumably infielder German Barranca think they wanted to make room for another in in the off season rather than lose them to free agency Nolan becomes the fifth regular player from the 1981 club to leave joining third baseman Ray Knight who was traded to Houston and right fielder Dave Collins who left as a free agent With three of their first four hitters from the 1981 lineup gone Nolan thought he would be more valuable to the Reds this year because of his hitting why he was surprised to be traded riday for outfielder jallas Williams Jr and oitcher Brooks Carey couldn't udnerstand why (he was Nolan said seen Stanger things hap order and expected to join the Baltimore club on Sunday Nolan had arranged to rent house in Cincinnati this year but those plans were changed Nolan was a little apprehen sive about going to the Ameri can League where he has never played and facing pitch ers he has never seen But he figured the move could benefit him just as his decision to leave the Atlanta Braves in 1980 led him to Cincinnati of the times things like this happen for the Nolan said "When I got out of Atlanta it happened for the Exhibition Baseball Rose Comes By The Associated Press Pete Rose made a successful spring debut Saturday and pitcher Larry Christenson turned in an impressive six in ning stint as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4 2 in an exhibition baseball game Rose who has been slowed by a back muscle injury played in his first spring game and sin gled twice in three at bats The 40 year old first baseman also stole a base Christenson yielded just three singles and struck out seven and also doubled home two runs in the second peration me to stay put for the first couple of pitches but with two strikes on the bat ter he told me to go ahead He figured if I could play I could steal a Corrales intended to play Rose only a few innings and lifted him after the fourth was good to see an um pire back there a lot differ ent than just batting said Rose who injured his back playing tennis last month feeling in the back that went down my leg scared me but gone The feeling there now is nothing I just feel where it was sore But that locates it in one area and I can get the treatment there doesn't hurt me to run swing or dive ready to keep on playing I think what Pat wanted to see most was the Why did he take a chance on diving? only know one way to play and the way going to Rose said Rose said he still felt a little soreness from the treatment I get every day It will go away still come to the ballpark early every day and get my Meanwhile Nolan Ryan tuned up for his opening day assignment with seven strong innings keep me Nolan said Saturday got quite a few in the lineup but not that much surprised It was my op tion The trade leaves the Reds Nolan in my option year so I could have become a free agent next year It seems to be the way things have been moving the last cou ple The Reds traded outfielders Ken Griffey and George oster pen in the game but I would have liked to Stay in Cincin Nolan figures to be
