SPARKS Petitions for and against Virginia High head football coach Jerry Watford and his staff were presented to the Bristol Virginia Board of Education Monday night A crowd of about 70 attended the session and heard one group criticize and another praise the Bearcat coaches Curtis Goins and JC Perry served as the spokesmen for the group that presented the Board with ten petitions asking for a revaluation of the entire athletic program at VHS THE BOARD did not announce how many names were on the petitions which were countered by a petition from some Virginia High students The petition supporting Watford was presented by Gary Booher captain of the 1970 VHS football team Booher and several members of the VHS squad appeared in support of their coaching staff but voiced dissatisfaction with their dressing room facilities and the fact that they have no stadium of their own The anti Watford group listed five reasons for its unrest They objected that the VHS team was cancelled for 1970 decision to leave some seniors out of some squad pic tures made before the season started the cutting of 10 12 players from the squad men tioned the quitting of one player following the Marion game and cited a lack of discipline as a major problem at VHS The aforementioned was presented by Gons and Perry told the Board that Watford did not visit injured players at Virginia High and objected to the VHS staff failing to send a representative to a local ellowship of Christian Athletes meeting this year in Bristol SEVERAL other persons voiced dissatisfaction with the Virginia High athletic program and coaching staff The most outspoken was Charlie Cross whose son was among those cut from the squad Cross asked that the Board dismiss Watford as head football coach Tim Smith a former VHS gridder quickly stood and ob jected to statement JACK MARTIN a Bristol Virginia radio announcer was the most resounding voice in behalf Martin told the group he had three sons to play under Watford and had nothing but praise for the Bearcat coach One of Virginia most talented players in recent years Dale Rucker also spoke in pro Watford fashion However Rucker joined others in ex pressing his opinion that Wat ford did not have enough help at Virginia High Several parents of Virginia High athletes spoke for and against Watford as the Board heard the pros and cons: NO MEMBER of the Board made any comment and an swered with a when asked by Jack Mellett if the Board contemplated making any changes in the coaching staff at this time There was much logic in the statements made by spokesmen for each side and some was a bit humorous Booher one of the many members of the football squad to speak told the Board that the dressing room facilities were unsatisfactory we were dressing for the Tennessee High game Saturday night a big rat ran across the he said The group cracked up but there was a show of embarrassment across the faces of some of the Board members It was the general opinion of most including those in support and against Watford and his staff that there are a lack of coaches and facilities for VHS athletes While some wanted Watford fired it was notewor thy that most seemed to agree that the Bearcat head coach had been shortchanged as far as qualified help in the form of assistant coaches was con cerned When the session ended there had been more people to rise and speak in defense of Watford than against the Bearcat mentor 77 4 T' jOCVB it rAri Aw rflflOaWW TOUGH WARRIORS Tom Hill (80) and Mike Coe (32) are just two of the hard nose Chilhowie Warriors
