attended He participated in the service when available to a synagogue except the Sabbath when He was on the Cross The Pharisees taught the observance of the Sabbath and Jesus placed His approval on the true things they taught In Matt 23:2 He said: therefore whatsoever they bid you ob serve that observe and do but do not ye after their works for they say and do Jesus arose on the first day of the week established it as the Day and met with His disciples to John 20:19 The next Day He met with them again Thomas being present 20:26 Relief Offering Paul attended services on the Lord's Day 20:7 In 1 Cor 16:2 he appealed to the Corinthians for a relief offering for the Chris tians in need in Jerusalem He also gave an example of the accepted and established pat tern of the church upon the first day of the week One passage of scripture is an individual exhortation to each' of us: Hebrews not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together as the manner of some is (they had the prob lem then also) The Psalmist said glad when they said unto me us go into the House of the Ps 122:1 Consider Difference If regular church attendance is beneficial to those who attend helping them to grow in grace and develop into greater usefulness it would do the same things for those who do not attend Consider the difference if all members benefited eaual to those who do attend There would be four or five times more people who pray live righteously wjn souls study help and give Then we would begin to catch up with the many millions who are not evangel ized The things that people do who do not attend is also a challenge to attendance They are lazy they sleep they neglect Christian worship exercise and growth they indulge in sin They sin against their judgment and conscience they present the wrong example and stand in the way of others they drift they experience un happiness and the loss of a useful and needful Christian life Evaluated Churches are usually evaluated by their at tendance their warmness and friendliness of spirit and their financial giving This is a good spiritual barometer Those who do not attend prove a detriment to their church in this re spect There are many excuses given for lack of attendance but none of them really suffice If all the really converted members attended reg ularly it would not be long until the world would know the fuH meaning of Christianity through the followers of Christ of the owners the Rev Wallace owler president of the Bristol Ministerial Association Bud Walling director of the speedway Bristol Tennessee Mayor A urlow Attendance This is the third in a series of articles covering mid week prayer services In Bristol area churches The 'Herald Courier will publish each Wednesday or Thurs day as the case may be a report on the activities of the previous evening at a church In or near Bristol I Ministers of all faiths have cordially agreed to co operate In this new venture which it is hoped will provide mid week Inspiration for all readers The Eoitor The Rev John Outland pastor of Wood lawn Baptist Church spoke last night at the regular mid week prayer service on the im portance of regular church attendance His re marks follow: Let us give our attention to a church char acteristic tht is noted often but not fully under the characteristic of church attendance Over a period of time the practice of church attendance proves to be basic and fundamental to the total church relationship Not only is it beneficial within itself but presents a continuing situation beneficial to growth and development of all other graces and virtues available to those attending It places those who attend in an atmosphere of praying preaching teaching giving and sing ing They are available for the challenge of the' pulpit the appeal of the teacher the attrac tion of the music and the fellowship of the people Practically every local congregation among all denominations is faced with this problem It is not peculiar to only a few In our own de nomination Southern Baptist we now number more than 32000 churches and something more than 9000000 members Yet on any Sunday morning with the probable exception of Easter there will be less than 4000000 in Sunday school and less than 3000000 in morning worship At the evening worship there will be about one half of the morning congregation At the mid week service among Southern Baptists there are less than 1000000 people who meet for prayer and Bible study Among our Baptist churches of the area about one half of the resident members attend the Sunday school less than this attend the worship service and about one fourth attend the evening service About one fourth to one sixth attend the mid week prayer and Bible study service Universal Problem Ulis is a problem with all other congrega tions also No pastor or church has anything to boast about when the attendance is compared with those who are expected to be present It is not a problem due to lack of room or facilities in the church buildings It is true that if most of the membership should attend very few of their church buildings could ac modate them It is also true that at most of the services there is more than adequate room Should the problem be solved and all the mem bers and friends begin attending I am per suaded that very fast their pastors and con gregations would build for them the necessary buildings and facilities Why is the matter of attendance so important? God is aware ot its importance and pro vides scriptural teaching adequate for all churches of the entire church age Jesus rec ognized the value of regular attendance In King College und Drive Kick Off Slated Tonight fca "A Ji wir it Whtes fwQsB' 1 'ret I iMHORw ft rtK iwsh: iKu i i il wi aV asaHBMAb i JESaala aMEMSr aMlM ti tire io ts I 4 wu MwV rM i Vft 1 i 5 Mhl JT 1 HHS'I I iELkl Hi ASwwj ll I MI rar i wj vail iTu i I MeSj IwkS 'As ki icrmvni3Tnia wnmi mvm j1 i Ik" WKaBW HaMW in 1 (Afar I 1 74 taP i alX i 4XTf IV ausLCi was nr a a 4W ww 4 fA 'i 4.
