regarding her relative the late Col Thomas Gathright first president of the A and College of Texas Today the following informa tion was received in a letter from Garland armer editor of the Henderson Texas Times Colonel Gathright is buried in what is known as in Hen derson just west of the Rusk County Courthouse A masonic monument at the grave is inscribed in part: "Born in Monroe County Ga Jan 5 1829 died May 24 Other inscriptions have to do with his service in including Grand Master of Mississippi 1868 69 armer further states that Jef ferson Davis was first offered the presidency of A and College and that he declined recommend ing Gathright for the place At the time of his selection for the Texas A and post Gathright was State Superintendent of Public in struction in Mississippi Colonel Gathright resigned as president of A and College in 1879 to become president of Hen derson College one of the more important educational institutions in those days Gathright was the second Chapter representatives from Central Texas heard Mrs Glenn North rup director of volunteer services for the Midwestern area of the American National Red CroM at a meeting in Temple Thursday ar the Veterans Administration Hos pital Dr Cochran manager of the Veterans Administration Hos pital in Temple welcomed the group to the hospital and praised the work of Red Cross volunteers in the Temple hospital Mrs Nel son Smith of Waco who is chair man of the Red Cross Brazos Council serving the Veterans Ad ministration Hospital in Waco gave the response to Dr welcome II 2L DeLoache Preside Mrs Northrup ufts then in troduced by DeLoache of Lampasas who presided and Mrs Northrup spoke of feature plan ning for Red Cross Vounteer Serv ices Mrs Northrup stressed in her remarks the immeasurable atal MARLN Nov Mrs I Clawson 81 who died in a Marlin hospital Thursday was buried Saturday She had been hospitalized since Sept 26 when she suffered a fall that resulted in a( fractured leg Mrs Clawson was formerly Miss Clara Corn a native of Port Gib son Miss She was born there June 2 1867 On January 13 1885 she was married to I Clawson there and the couple moved that year to Texas where they engaged in farming for one season In Cass County before moving to the Blue Ridge community of alls County in December 1885 Her husband engaged in farming at Blue Ridge until 1927 and the couple moved to Reagan and lived until 1943 when they moved to Marlin Mrs Claw son joined the Methodist Church in 1889 and wss a member of the Reagan Methodist Church at the time of her death uneral services
