The screenings are recommended for farmers, construction workers and anyone who spends time in the sun. LaVerne Sage, program chairman, introduced her topic, "Canada to the north is our friendly neighbor, too. Let's visit her people, cities and some sights to view." Assisting her was her husband, Eldred Sage. The Sages had driven to Alaska through Canada recently. They traveled over 4,000 miles in one-month. The couple found the temperatures to be pleasant there in July.

It was 2,000 miles up to the Alaskan Highway. She said the highway was built in 1942 by American troops who were threatened by invasion from the Aleutian Islands. It is under reconstruction today because it was built hurriedly and because of the severe winter weather in the area. She also spoke of the roads, some are very rough, but as a whole they are passable. One village they traveled through, Mautuchl Valley, was settled by people from Kansas and Oklahoma after the 1934-36 dust storms.

He described the area's "Cinderella" crop-Canola. He said there are great expanses of these fields, which are like a wheat crop. Canola began as an experimental crop there. Next, they stopped in Gatlin-burg, touring the Pigeon Forge area, Dollywood Park and Museum and Christus Gardens. In South Carolina, the group took a drive through the mountains and viewed the fall colors.

They also visited Biltmore House and Gardens and Winery. In Nashville, they had dinner on board the General Jackson. En route home, they stopped over at Whitehaven in Puducah, Ky.
