Lindsey Shawbcrger Miller Kosmac Trapani Land Hemphill Tittle Cason Landry Montgomery By JINX TUCKER Tribune Herald Sports Editor The best football team Texas Christian university has had since 1938 barely nosed out the Baylor Bears by a score of 7 to 6 The game was played on a heavy grid iron Saturday afternoon at Muny stadium before 5000 fans and the young Baylor team really out classed gave a remarkable exhi bition to keep the game as close as it 'was You can give no more praise to the battling spirit of the Baylor team than to say that in the first half TCU had to gain 229 yards through the air and on the ground to make the one touch down that proved enough for vic tory when Moon Mullins kicked the point after touchdown which Baylor failed to get after its touch down in the second quarter The rogs while completely out classing Baylor in the first half were really outplayed in the sec ond half but gc this straight In the third quarter Baylor had the wind and with the wind threat ened several times while defense was far too great for the Bears when the chips were down The Boars still had the rogs on their heels at the start of the fourth quarter when TCU had the wind When TCU did get out of the hole it was content to take no chances and protect its one point lead In the second half the rogs threw only one pass In the third quarter TCU was on the defense most of the time and had no chance to pass In the fourth quarter with the game won TCU refused to gamble with a pass In the first half TCU flashed the best passing attack of any rog team since the team of 1938 Leon Joslin the Waxahachie product not only lived up to his reputation but he surpassed it He was everything that had been said of him and a little more He was as cool as the well known cucumber under fire that Tommy Mon roe of this city is playing with the March ield team He was transferred from Sookane Wash unon orders from Washington to be with that team Monroe Mexia was the champion of the district last year and is favored again this season but Mexia has a new team which isnot as strong as last se ason Mart has a vet eran team It has 10 starters back from last year The other start er rank Moon now Lloyd Gatesville team is favored to win its third litlein a row Clifton is the dark horse of the district La Vega is not as strong as last year' when it finished? third West is rebuild ing and is very weak this year while Itasca has little or nothing having forfeited to Gatesville and McGregor This district is in Re gion No 8 and the winner will phv the champion of the No 30 district in' bi sea son but Taylor wins most of the time Cameron is better than last year and might make trouble but Belton Georgetown and Rosebud are not due to makeserious bids for the title The winner of this district title plays the winner of 31 A in bi district play It is com posed of redericksburg Gold thwaite Lampasas Llano and San Saba That district is stronger than usual Lamnasas has defeat ed Belton and tied Killeen which defeated Gatesville Goldthwaite is also strong but Lampasas loomsas the district title The cham pion of 31 A and 32 A plays the champion of 29 A and 30 A for the regional title Baylor has an off week and will have two weeks to get ready for the invasion of the University of Arkansas on Oct 12 Greit Running Attack Tn addition TCU had a great run ning attack ana a fine defense It was a 30 per cent better football team than any in the conference last year' and it is going to be very hard to beat for the conference title Baylor offered the' super line star of the day in Bull Johnson center He was a marvel on defense Down by the goal line he was a wonder He bowled through and spilled rog plays at their inception The weather of the morning had indicated that' there would be little or no passing If such had been the case Baylor might have won Not only did Joslin pass but he passed with unerring accuracy He passed in a manner that 'would ljave been a credit to the best in the land on an ideal day Baylor could not begin to break up his aerials To the "everlasting credit of the Bears let it be vsaid that th ey? never quit and they gave the TCU followers many unpleasant moments Sammie Pierce the Vernon star ploughed through the powerful 4 rog line at times and1 Price' did a great job 'of passing the Gatesville flash however spends more time to get his passes off and was rushed off his feet time and time again when he went in In addition' to Joslin Moon Mullins Norman Cox and Jesse Mason starred in the TCU backfield In the second half TCU made only one first down to four for Baylor but that was largely due to the fact that TCU did not pass in the second half indicating the kind of game it might have been without the great rog passing or maybe we should say super great In the first quarter TCU started on the Baylor 25 yard line With Mullins Mason and Joslin leading the way the rogs roared down to the Baylor 20 There the Bears stopped the running drive but Joslin passed to Gibson for a first down on the Baylor four On four downs the rogs failed to make the four It was a mighty goal line stand by the Bears Price who did a magnificent job of punting through out the game kicked Baylor out of the hole near the close of the first quarter which was scoreless rogs at Their Best With the advantage of the wind in the second periftd TCU went all out That was when the rogs were at their best showing everything they had The rogs thundered down to the Baylor four and then tried a lateral pass Joslin was rushed hard but tried to throw the lateral anyway It was a big" mistake Joe Joiher of Baylor intercepted it He was in a clear field at the start The 'Baylor team gathered back of him and he raced 96 yards for a touchdown with out a TCU player getting close to him None was as close as the 50 yard line as Joiner scored The rogs received and came right back With Joslin passing with brililance the rogs thun dered deep into Baylor territory one pass to Mason being good for 29 yards The rogs got down to the Baylor seven first down but again with all the chips down could not make it on four downs the Bears again display ing a great goal line defense Price kicked out to the Baylor 42 "Cox then passed to Joslin for nine North Hood Victors GATESVILLE Sept North Camp Hood licked Allen Academy 12 0 here tonight on a muddy grid iron Myers scored the
