Corner of Wood 3d streets. Cook Scoy, 57 XCLUSIVE agents of the "Productive IA Spelling written by Mr. N. It; Smith, feel gratified by the approbation already bestowed upon it. From the following letters received by the Author, the public may judge of the estimation in which it is held by distinguished scholars, and experienced teachers.

From the Rev. John Black, D. D. Pittsburgh, June 9, 1834. Dear Sir: have not found leisure until this morning to examine the book which you had the politeness to send me, for my opinion.

I have Cooked over the work, and have no hesitation in saying it will be a valuable acquisi tion to our schools. You have, I think, simplified, as far as possible, the elementary sounds in our alphabet, considering that we have so many simple sounds in our language, and so few vowels to express them. 'The plan you follow in the combination of sounds in spelling, is judicious and rational. I highly approve of your association of the relative sound of consonants; also the association of particular classes of words having the 6ame orthography but of entirely diffbrent meaning and requiring clear distinctions of sound in their pronunciation; orlhoepists have hitherto much neglected this -iiii Up-jn the whole, you have furnished a school book calculated to connect ideas with the words, and communicate to the learner something more than the mere mechanical instruction which but two generally prevails. I wish you success in the publication of your contemplated seiies of school books, having no doubt, from the specimen before me, that they will be a valuable acquisition to the public.

Respectfully yours, JOHN BLACK." "Mr. N- R- Smith." From the Rev. John JVinlcr. "Pittsburgh, June 11, 1834. "Dear Sir: I have not found time, until novy, to examine your Spelling Book.

From 14 year's experience in teaching, I have often had to regiet the imperfection of our elementary books. From the bad arrangement of words, and the indistinct onnor in which sounds are marked, and the total want of distinction in thoe minuter shades oi sound, in which the beaaty ot onnoepy consists, I have been led to attribute that want of classical beauty of expression, which is lamentably mamtesi iu uc deficiencies appears to be the grand aim of your work, as well as to cultivate idea3 with the acqui-sition'of words; and. in these things, I think you have well succeeded, and done as well as can be done with our meagre vowel system. I believe your book to be among the very best I have examined, and do hope that your encouragement will be such as to induce you to persevere, until you shall have given the public a set of elementary books worthy of their encouragement. "Yours; respectfully.
