At about a quarter before ten o'chck, the procession moved from Arch street prison, headed by the high constable, and escorted by a detachment from the Navy lard, of ihe marines, and by some hundred mounted citizens. The gallows'was at Bush-hiil a short distance from the new penitentiary. At a quarter before eleven, the rope was tied, and the culprit soon ceased to breathe.

Two clergymen were with him, reciting prayers. A vast crowd including a great number of females had assembled to witness this awful scene. A large proportion of them averted their heads when 'the fatal drop fell. Disturbance, and even an attempt to rescue, were apprehended before the execution, hut no disorder of any kind took place. It is to be hoped that all public discussions concerning Porter's fite will cease; except so far as it mav be held up as a warning to malefactors, ordeemed to fjrnish an argument against the expediency of capital punishment ia general.

Thomas Taekaberry. COURSE AND INFLUENCE OF THE COTTON TRADE. A writer in the N.Y. American has these remarks and speculations on the fact mentioned in one of our late numbers that three bags of Australian Cotton were hkly sold in Liverxiol market, and produced lid. per lb.

They are worthy of record for future observation, and to detei-mine how for the anticipations expressed may be sanctioned by events. A. Y. Alias. There are those yet iu active business in New Vork who remember when cotton article so little understood, tiiat sea island and upland were offered at the same and when the late venerable and virtuous Jay made his celebrated treaty with Britain, he did not know that cotton was the pro-duce of the States. What a striking contrast within, the compass of less than half a centurv! Five bigs of American cotton, in the year 171, to be sold a thne lots against neara million of bags annually exported from the United States. Vtho shall say what the trade with New South Wales may become in a similar period? The article may be carried from that colony for less than what a few earssiuce was considered a fairfreight from New York.

Our own Tariff wiil give an impulse to the trade, and the price paid in Liverpool for the three bags, averasing lid. ptr pound, shows that it is a superior article, aud therefore a filter substitute for our cottons than those of India.
