with A Shock of Sherman the newly elected president of the as sociation in the chair The conven tion was attended by 117 telephone men and was characterized by one prominent visiting telephone man as "the most successful Independent con vention held in this state since the organization of the association" Tho entire ticket brought in by the nominating committee wa selected without opposition or other speakers on various subjects The regulations of the new war tax bill were explained by Blomeyer This bill imposes a tax of one cent on every telephone message costing 15c or more A committee composed of Gardner of Waco: Merrill Jr Tyler and XV McQuown was appointc4 to recommend handling the collection which becomes effective country on December 1 Tho committee on resolutions com posed of Blomeyer A Shock and Smith reported seven resolu tions to the convention of which were adopted Cheif among these was tho resolution opposing the creation of a public service commission for this state The association went on record as strenuously opposing tho present tax ation of telephone companies and de nouncing the gross receipts or tax of per cent on all gross receipts of the business "Telephone recites the resolution" "pay now high ad valorem tuxes on all properly both tangible and intangi ble to state to counties school districts and to municipalities They pay a tax of 1 cent to the federal government on their not earnings a tax of 1J4 per cent to the slate on their gross receipts and in addition a franchise tax to tho statu on their capital stock In nil they pay in taxes
