The human stomach has been a shamefully persecuted organ' There was a time when for every direlietion of duty it was punished with huge doses of the most disgusting; and nauseous drugs. In vain it rejected them, and (literally) returned them upon the hands of those who administered them. They were forced upon it again and again, until its solvent power was thoroughly drenched out of iv The world is wiser sow than it was in that drastic era.

when furious purgation and mercurial sallivation were what Artemus Ward would have called tike "main holt" of the faculty, in cases of dyspepsia aad liver complaint. The great modern remedy for indigestion and biliousness is HOSTETTEE'S STOMACH BITTERS, a preparation which has the merit of combining a palatable flavor with euih tonic, aperient and antibOions properties, as were sever heretofore united in any one medicine. It has been discovered, at last, that sick people are not like the fabled Titans, who found prostration so refreshing that, when knocked down, they rose from the earth twice as vigorous as before. When an invalid is prostrated by powerful depleting drugs, he is apt to stay prostrated and the debilitated being aware of the fact, prefer the building up to the knocking down system of treatment. HOSTETTER'S BITTERS meets the requirements of the rational medical philosophy which at present prevails.

It is a perfectly pore vegetable remedy, embracing the three important properties of a preventive, a tonic, and an alterative. It fortifies the body against disease, invigorates and re-vitalises the torpid stomach and liver, and effects a most salutary change in the entire system, when in a morbid condition. In summer, when the enfeebling temperature renders the human organisation particularly susceptible to unwholesome atmospherio influences, the Bitters should be taken as a proteo- tion against epidemic diseases. jy21dtw Schenck' Pulmonic Syrup, Seaweed Tonic and Mandrake Pills will cure Consumption, Liver Complaint and Dyspepsia, if taken accor to the directions. They are all three to be taken at one time.

They clei the stomach, i elax the liver, and put it to work then the app.tite becomes good: the food digests and makes good blood i the patient begins to grow in flesh the diseased matter ripens in the lungs, and th patient outgrows the disease and gets well. This is the only way to cure Consumption. To these three medicines Dr. J. H.

Sohenck. of Philadelphia, owes his unrivalled success in the treatment of Pulmonary Consumption. The Pulmonic Syrup ripens the morbid matter in the lungs, nature throws it of by an easy ex pectoration, for when the phlegm or matter is ripe a slight cough will throw it off, aad the pa tient has rest and the lungs begin to heal; To do this, the Seaweed Tonio and Mandrake Pills must be freely used to cleanse the stomach and liver, so that the Pulmonic Syrup and the food will make good blood. Schenck's Mandrake Pills act upon the liver, removing all obstructions, relax the ducts of the gall bladder, the bile starts freely and the liver is soon relieved the stools will show what the Pills Can do nothing has ever been invented except calomel (a deadly poison which is very dangerous to use unless with great care) that will unlock the gall bladder and start the secretions of the liver like Schenck's Mandrake PiUs. Liver Complaint is one of the most prominent causes of Consumption.

Schenck's Seaweed Tonic is a gentle stimulant and alterative, and the alkali in the Seaweed, which this preparation is made of. assists the stomach to throw out the gastric juice to dis solve the oo with the Pulmonic Syrup, and it is made into good blood without fermentation or souring in the stomach. The great reasons why physicians do not euro COBgumption is, they try to do too much thsti give medicine to stop the coughs, to stop chills. to stop night sweats, hectic fever, and by so do ing they derange the whole digestive powers, locking up the secretions, and eventually the patient sinks and dies. Dr.

Sohenck. in his treatment, does not try to stop a cough, night sweats, chills or fever. Remove the cause, and they will stop of their owa accord. No one can be cured of Consumption. Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia, Catarrh, Canker.

Ulcerated Throat, unless the liver and stomach are made healthy. If a person has consumption, of course, the lungs, in some way. are diseased, cither tuber cles, abcesses. bronchical irritation, pleura ad hesion, or the lungs are a mass of inflammation and fast decaying. In such cases, what must be done It is not only the lungs that are wast ing, but it is the whole body.

The stomach and liver have lost their power to make blood out of food. Now. the only chance is to take Dr. Schenck's three medicines, which will bring up a tone to the stomach, the patient will begin to ut food, it will duroet easily and make good blood then the patient begins to gain in flesh, and, as soon as the body begins to grow, the lungs commence to heal up, and the patient gets fleshy and well. This is the only way to care Consumption.

Where there is no lung disease, and only Liver Complaint and Dyspepsia. Schenck's Seaweed Tonio and Mandrake Pills are sufficient, without the Pulmonic Sprnp, Take the Mandrake Pills freely in all bilious complaints, as they are perfectly harmless. Cut this out and put it where you can see It" rim cera. Junius Henry Brown, in the last number of Packard's Monthly has a long article on "Printers," from which we extract the following truthful paragraphs: Printing-ink begets cynicism, as dampness rheumatism, or foul air fevers. There is no escsping it. Men in printing offices, whether they prepare or set copy, contract the disease, and suffer from it more or less, as their mental system responds to or resists it. They are be hind the scenes.

They know that the golden crowns and goblets the public admires are only pasteboard; that the glittering jewels are only colored glass, that the crimson glory of the tableaux is but a flash of red fire; that the mouthing fellow who is lavish of his dukedoms is in arrears for his morning cocktail. Life is unidealized to tbem from the outset. It is stripped of its illusions, aad fine names are but echoes of emptiness. Way expect tbem to admire? Why ask them to be ambitious? Why look for enthusiasm in them? The printer undersiands how reputations are made. He knows that they are not blown forth from the trump of fame, but from the tramp of him who seeks reputation by performing solo, and gets it thereby.

He is aware that while genius starves, impudence fattens; that while wisdom hides in a garret, flippancy draws on the pave; that while inspiration pines, man-agement flushes with health. He sees that the eloquent language of the statesman or artist is not in the statesmen's or artist's own head; that honors are easy to the man that has the effrontery to ask, and the determination not to be denied. No marvel he believes all achiev menta unworthy, all success a sort of cheat, all persons of emlnenee those who have not yet oeeu louna out. The St. Joseph Union says "John Sheridan, an old compositor in the Union office, has saved enough from his typo-sticking wages within three or fonr years to pay $1,000 for one of the finest sections of land in Buchanan county, and is now casting around for more territory.
