Robert Garcia, of Riverside, who stopped to buy strawberries and cheese bread at the open-air farmer's market, said the market breathes life into the city.

"It gives people an opportunity to mingle and businesses an opportunity to sell," he said. On Fifth Street, Leslie Della-ro, of Woodcrest, was selling her sweet basil, chives, thyme, tomatoes, sweet peppers and other organically grown plants. Dellaro said she was happy about the opening of the downtown open-air food market, which provides a venue for selling and buying freshly picked oranges, flowers, strawberries and cinnamon rolls. "Especially for people who work during the day, it gives them a great advantage to shop for fresh produce," said Dellaro. "The message has the same appeal for both sexes, actually. We find a lot of men have been reading Self for the health information." And fitness tips might not be the only thing healthy about self-help men's magazines. In a broader sense, such publications signal that men are willing to drop the tough-guy stance and admit they're not perfect. But even if men are willing to swallow more self-help these days, they're still not taking the wm By LARRY FLICK Billboard magazine NEW YORK Michael Jackson and Madonna were the big winners in Billboard's Music or the '80s poll. Jackson topped four categories in the poll, which asked Billboard readers to pick their favorite artists and recordings from the last 10 years.

Jackson was voted black artist of the decade, and his "Billie Jean" won as best black single. In addition, Jackson's mega-selling "Thriller" won in both the pop and black album categories. Madonna followed closely behind, winning in three categories, including pop and dance artist of the decade. Her No. 1 club hit, "Into the Groove," was voted best dance single.

Readers were asked to fill out a ballot in the Dec. 23, 1989, edition of Billboard, choosing their favorites in the pop, black, country, adult contemporary, dance, jazz, gospel and classical categories. Downtown merchants believe more people will jam the marketplace in the fall, when the historic Mission Inn reopens as a hotel and restaurant.

The 240-room Mission Inn, owned by Chemical Bank of New York, is undergoing a $40 million renovation. The market seemed like the perfect way to bring families together for an evening of entertainment as well as generate business for downtown merchants, said Chris Richards, promotions director of the Riverside Downtown Association. In the rush to get home after work, downtowns are often forgotten, Winner said. "(Riverside is) a bedroom community," he said. "That's OK. We don't need most guys. We need a portion." That portion is tired of the approach of traditional men's magazines. For them, Playboy offers skin, but not enough practical advice on sex. Esquire is too smirky, too obsessed with the idea that being a real man involves Scotch and cigars, not sit-ups.

And GQ? Well, it looks pretty, but who's really going to wear a closetful of Italian suits? "Our readers seem to really want something different," says Lafavore. "It's important to them to have more energy, to be a better lover, to get more sleep." Men's Health started out in 1985 as a newsletter. Successful enough to inspire a special newsstand issue, it eventually evolved into a bimonthly magazine. Its circulation is 260,000. Lafavore doesn't mind comparisons to women's magazines, saying he'd "like to do the same thing as Self for men." Neither does Ted Mason, health editor for MF.

"Read a copy of Cosmo, then read a copy of MF," he says. "You'll notice a similarity." In addition to chatting about sexual secrets, the current issue of MF explores sperm counts, exercises for "a great pair of legs" and sizzling summer recipes. It's all part of a major editorial change for the magazine, which three years ago switched from sports to grooming and fitness, "Men are far more interested in examining themselves, in exploring the psychology of self-help now," says Mason. "I really don't know what to ascribe it to. Did women lead the way? Perhaps." Ooloong Smith, managing editor of Ebony Man, traces the change to shifts in the workplace.

But, says Smith, it quickly broadened its focus to include those staples of women's magazines relationships and sexuality.

"We were really the first to do that," he boasts. "And why not? After all, this is the '90s. Information does not necessarily carry a gender. We share our lives with other people, male and female." Relationships are sticky territory for self-help men's magazines, and many of the articles on love and sex are more celebratory than self-examining. For example, MGF's big relationship article this month is "The Soulful Sounds of Sex," an ode to the joys of noisy lovemaking.

The bedroom is still an area where most men are reluctant to admit the need for self-help, says Men's Health's Lafavore. "If we looked readers in the eye and asked them, do you want more articles on how to be a better lover, they might say, 'Nah, me? Are you But through research, we've gotten reinforcement that they do want that. The stereotype is that men don't think about relationships. That's wrong. They don't talk about it, but they think about it.

They think about it a lot." Editors of women's magazines say they're flattered that men are starting to pick up on their approach.
