The 60-w«M«e oi Tele-Times Dec. 21 WSO Page 25 TONY AWARD winner Barnard Hughes stars in the provocative political drama, "A Conflict of Interest," on Showtime, airing Dec. 32, Dec. 27 and Jan. 1 Christmas specials are plentiful on the cable By TONV SEIDEMAN From the sports channels to the pay services to the kids' networks, cable TV is stirring with holiday spirit. Christmas is coming, and cable is celebrating the holiday with a whole slew of specials. Home Box Office has three Christmas-oriented specials coming up. Foremost among them is "Standing Room Only: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Live on Stage." Taped at New York's Radio City Musical, this "Snow White" is a musical version of the famous feature-length animated version, right down to such songs as "Whistle While You Work," "Heigh Ho" and "Someday My Prince Will Come." Mary Jo Salerno is appealing as the fairy princess, and the supporting cast works well, but the magic just isn't as bright as it was in the original ani/nated version. Still, since Disney is loath to let its cartoon features reach the small screen, it is the best that can be had. Also, the reactions of kids in the audience wteey poo the bad guys and cheer on the good guys adds a degree of intensity few cartoons achieve. Look for the show on Dec. 2i Also on HBO is "Rich Little's A Christmas Carol," a slightly bizzare show io which Little plays all of the Dickens characters as modern super- stars, giving himself a chance to imitate such luminaries as W.C. Fields, Johnny Carson and Paul Lynde. The humor isn't the guffaw type, but there are laughs to be had and the impressions are definitely on target. The lead offering on Nickelodeon will be "Hansel and Gretel," a "special delivery" starring animated models backed by human voices. Cute is the operating word here, though all the nasty remarks about witches eating children should be enough to keep the kids glued to the screens while the parents open their presents. The show will be on Christmas Day twice. Also to be seen are "The Christmas Tree," "Jack Frost" and "Mandy's Grandmother." » 1. 1 No sports will be found on the USA network this Christ- ,mas Eve. Instead there will) fee double servings of CaJUope and the English Channel. After that, Ray Gosling, a British reporter in the Charles Kuralt mode, will Wke a journey trying to find Christmas at a traditional English village, while Calliope wiU present "The Twelve Days of Christms," "Cbristnjas Around the World" and "The Christmas Tree," afljon| other productions.
