Has Its Own News Coverage With NJPTV By JOAN POINT The Oklahoma born and New Jersey has long suf- educated newsman fered an identity crisis, sit ting as it does in the shadow of its powerful neighbor. The influencial New York television news media have virtually ignored the Garden State except, perhaps, for those times when the President has visited, a "crazy" has gone on a rampage, or the Passaic River has flooded. Now, a new, half-hour television program, "New Jersey Nightly News," a joint presentation of New Jersey Public Television (NJPTV) and THIRTEEN, may well change New Jersey's self image.

The program, which premiered May 8, is an expansion of the weeknightly news show that has appeared on the state-owned network for the past seven years, seen here on Channels 50 and 58. Clayton Vaughn, "New Jersey Nightly News" elaborated on his theories of local broadcasting practices and responsibilities. "Local news, over the past 10 or 12 years, has been the local station's biggest money generator. They end up with "happy talk" or "rock and roll where well-coiffed anchor people run blood and fire stories and don't deal with substantial issues.
