FPHOFSSFNTINEL, THURSDAY, JAN. 5, H84 E-5 Obituaries Warren Police Report Stanley Stankus, Former Borough Teacher Robert G. MacCaulley Stanley A. Stankus, 72, a former teacher at North Plainfield High School, died Dec. 17 at Messenger House Nursing Home in Bainbridge Island, Wash.

Mr. Stankus had lived in New Jersey most of his life, graduating from Hillsborough High School. He was born in St. Louis, Mo. He worked for Exxon Corp.

in 1937 before serving in the Army during World War II. He graduated from Columbia University in 1948 and returned to Exxon until retiring in 1963. Mr. Stankus taught science at North Plainfield High School from 1968 to 1978 and moved to Washington in 1980. He was a distinguished fellow of the American Chemical Society and a member of the New Jersey Education Association.

An avid archer, he was also a member of the Watchung Bow Men. He was a member of the Columbia University Alumni Association and Holy Trinity Church in East Bremerton, Wash. Surviving are his wife, Helen Stankus; two daughters, Roberta Ward of Kirkland, and Kathy Little of Silverdale, a brother, Eugene of Boca Raton, two sisters, Isabel Bayle of Melbourne Beach, and Adele Scafuro of AUendale; and eight grandchildren. Arrangements were by Owyen Funeral Home in Bainbridge Island. Katherine MacArthur Babcock Funeral services were held last Monday for Katherine MacArthur Babcock, 81, of Deland, who died Dec.

21 in Florida. A former resident of Millington, she had been born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Chatham before moving to Millington where she lived for 21 years. While living in Chatham Mrs. Babcock was very active in American Ida Polskin Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 1 for Ida Bogoslowsky Polskin, 83, of North Plainfield, who died Thursday, Dec.

29 at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown. Born in Russia, Mrs. Polskin had lived in the borough for 50 years. She had previously lived in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a member of Independent Order of B'rith Abraham Lodge 627 of Plainfield.

She was also a member of the Plainfield chapter of Mizrachi. Her husband, Morris Polskin, died in 1950. Surviving are a son, Harvey Polskin of North Plainfield; a brother, Jack Bogod of North Miami Beach, Fla; three grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Arrangements were by Higgins Home for Funerals in Plainfield. Florence J.

Hedden Funeral services were held Tuesday for Florence J. Hedden, 83, of Passaic Township, who died Dec. 30 at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Born in Newark, Mrs. Hedden had lived in Stirling for the past 60 years.

She was a member of the Senior Citizens of Passaic Township and the Rosary Society of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Stirling. Surviving are three sons, Alfred J. Hedden of Mendham, John J. Hedden of Freehold and Robert Hedden of Stirling; two sisters, Madeleine Johnston of Irvington and Helen Carr of Newark; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel in Gillette. Ernest A. Wolf A memorial service for Ernest A. Wolf, 74, will be held Saturday, Jan. 7 at 11 a.m.

at the All Saints' Episcopal Church in Millington. Mr. Wolf died Dec. 29 after a short illness at the Morristown Memorial Hospital. He was born in Newark and lived in Millington for the past 25 years.

Before moving to Passaic Township, he had lived in Bemardsville. He is survived by two brothers, Frederick and Walter, both of Millington; and two sisters, Olga McWhirr of Basking Ridge and Francis Palm of Guilford, Conn. Howard Steinau Funeral services were held last Thursday, Dec. 29 for Howard H. Steinau of North Plainfield who died Tuesday, Dec.

27 at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield following a long illness. Born in New York City, Mr. Steinau had moved to Warrenville at age seven. He had lived in the borough for 60 years. He retired in 1973 from Thul's in Plainfield, where he worked as a machinist.

He was a member of Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church in North Plainfield. Surviving are his wife, Peggy Wyue Steinau of North Plainfield; two sons, Richard of Bridgewater and Joseph of North Plainfield; a daughter, Kathy Yurinko of North Plainfield; two sisters, Helen Tallamy of Edgewater and Kathy Waldron of North Plainfield; and eight grandchildren. Arrangements were by Scarpa Funeral Home in North Plainfield. Legion activities and with the American Red Cross. She taught a ceramics class in Chatham.

Mrs. Babcock had worked at Ciba- Geigy in Summit for 21 years in the packaging department before retiring. She was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Stirling. Suriviving are her husband, Joel Babcock; a daughter, Lee Klezer of Warren; and three grandchildren.

John R. Wtaslow John R. Winslow, 27, of New York City, and formerly of Vineland, died Friday at Hahnemann University Hospital, Philadelphia. He was a honor graduate of Vineland High School and received a bachelor's degree in Russian from Rutgers University. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and received a master's degree in Russian Literature from Columbia University.

Surviving are his wife, Karol Klauder Winslow, of Vineland, and formerly of Watchung; his mother Theresa Winslow, of Vineland; two sisters, Jessica, of Roosevelt, and Naomi, of Vineland; and a brother, David, of Vineland. Private funeral services were held Monday Jan. 2 from Wainwright- Bernhardt Funeral Home Vineland. Inurnment will take place at the Riverside Church Columbarium, New York City, where a memorial service will be held in the afternoon of Sunday, Jan. 29, with the Rev.

Monte Cox of the Riverside Church officiating. Contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Department Fund, Cystic Fibrosis Center, O'Toole Building, St. Vincent's Hospital, 7th Avenue and 11th Street, New York City, 10011. Robert Earl Hurlick Funeral services were held Tuesday for Robert Earl Hurlick, 60, of Millington, who died at home Dec. 30 after a brief illness.

Born in Roselle Park, he had lived in Millington for the past 24 years. Mr. Hurlick, an Army veteran of World War II who served in the 29th Division, was involved in the Normandy invasion and received three Purple Hearts. Surviving are his father, Warren S. Hurlick of Millington; a brother, Paul S.

Hurlick of Millington; and two sisters, Constance Alcan of Whiting and Marie Farman of Baltimore. Arrangements were by August F. Schmidt Funeral Home in Elizabeth. Best-Selling Book Is Topic Of Program Scott Peck's best-selling book, "The Road Less Traveled," will be the focus of a program at the new Ministries Center at the Shrine of St. Joseph, 1292 Long Hill Road, Stirling, Friday, Jan.

13 at 7:30 p.m. The Washington Post calls this new psychology of love, traditional values and spiritual growth "not just a book but a spontaneous act of generosity." To open its 1984 program season the center has asked Alice and Walden. Barnardsvillt 766-0155 Funeral services were held Friday for Robert G. MacCaulley, who died Dec. 27 at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield. He was 72. A long-time North Plainfield resident, he was born in Chicago.

He had lived in Siquorney, Neb. and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before moving to the area. He had been a merchant marine captain piloting a ship for the Sea Lift Command of the Navy for 39 years before retiring. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Storr-Richie Post No. 506 in North Plainfield.

He was also a member of the Master Mates and Pilots in New York City. He is survived by his wife, Anne K. McKenna MacCaulley; a son, John Richardson of Naples, a daughter, Karyn M. Sweitzer of Lyme Center, N.H.; a sister, Cara Brown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Arrangements were made by Memorial Funeral Home in Plainfield.

Mae Weiss Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 31 for Mae Matthews Weiss, 72, of Warren, who died Thursday, Dec. 29 at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Mrs. Weiss was born in Massachusetts and had lived in Warren since February, moving from North Plainfield.

She had also lived in Teaneck. She was a bank teller for Chemical Bank in New York City until retiring 10 years ago. Her husband, James Weiss, died in February. Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Hawthorne, with whom she lived, and Eleanor Nolte of Bridgewater; and six grandchildren. Arrangements were by Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung.

Dec. 21 About $1,850 worth of jewelry and cash were stolen in a burglary at a house on Morning Glory Road. Dec. 27 The Fire Department was called to Thermoplastics when an alarm went off, but the alarm was sounded by a broken sprinkler system. A light at the end of a driveway on Skyline Drive was shot out, causing about damage.

The Fire Department was called to Glassflex when a sudden drop in water pressure set off the fire alarm. America Perez, 467 Irvington Elizabeth, was involved in a one-car accident on Mountain View Road when her car struck a patch of thick ice, veered off the road and hit an embankment. Thomas Gaiser, 40 Reinman Road, was given a summons for failure to maintain control of his car after he lost control of his car and hit an embank-; ment and trees on Mountain View Road. Dec. 28 A resident of Mt.

Horeb Road told police her wallet was stolen while she was shopping at the Mini-Mall at Pheasant Run Shopping Plaza. Frederick Scheuble, 61 Chesapeake Lake Hiawatha, was involved in a one-car accident when his car skidded into a curb at Allied Chemical on Powder Horn Drive. Indictment Handed Down WATCHUNG A Westfield man was indicted for the attempted burglary of a car parked in a borough parking lot. Joseph Martin Pate, 546 Boulevard, Westfield, was indicted for third degree attempted burglary by the Somerset County Grand Jury recently. Pate is accused of attempting to burglarize a car at the Blue Star Shopping Center on Oct.

10. RECYCLE THIS NEWSPAPER Timothy Powers, 48 Morning Glory Road, was given a summons for careless driving after his car ran off the road at Dock Watch Hollow and Ferguson Road. Constance Gillen, 3 Owens Drive, was involved in a one-car accident when her car skidded on ice at Partridge Run and Mt. Horeb Road. There were no injuries and no summonses were issued.

A car driven by Mrs. Malcolm Plager, 63 Ferguson Road, skidded off the road at Mt. Horeb and King Geroge Roads. Nancy Hess of Clover Hill Road in Millington skid on ice and struck a utility pole while driving on Mountain View Road. Edward Ingraham, 3 Muller Place, was taken to Muhlenberg Hospital for treatment of minor injuries after his car was involved in a one-car accident on Dubois Road.

Anna Raiello, 70 Morning Glory Road, was driving on Morning Glory Road when her car slid and hit a pole. There were no injuries and no summonses were issued. Dec. 29 A gasoline pump at Warren Texaco was damaged during the night. Cars driven by Eric Koep, 32 Old Stirling Road, and Marianne Gennaro, 21 Valley View Road, collided in Koep's driveway.

Koep told police that he was parked in the driveway when Gennaro hit him, while Gennaro said that she had pulled into the driveway stopped when Koep backed into her car. Dec. The Fire Department was called when smoke from a furnace was discovered at a Mountain View Road home. Tracy A. Vella, 1250 Sherlin Drive, Bridgewater, was given a summons for failure to maintain control after an accident on Mountain Boulevard between her car and one driven by Jeffrey M.

Battis, 39 Valley View Road, Watchung. An accident was reported on Jennifer Lane between cars, driven by Doug Lamson of Millington and John Barton of Warren. Dec. 31 The Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at a Mountain View Road residence, but it was a false alarm caused by a boiler problem. Jan.

1 A Reinman Road resident told police his car's left front window was broken during the night. John Bossany, 51 Mountain was released on $50 bail after he was arrested on a motor vehicle warrant from Somerville. A Stirling Road resident told police her car's left rear window was broken during the night. Angelo M. Demarzo, 50 Mountain was released on $45 bail after he was arrested on a motor vehicle warrant from Berkeley Heights.
