LUBBOCK. TEXAS. WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER THE MORNING AVALANCHE-PACE fltt Cotton Control By Government, Compulsory If Necessary, Asked By Farmers Session Called lo Talk Plans fBy The Associated Press) ABILENE, Nov. control of if placing acreage on a percentage allotment plan was favored by West Texas farmers, many of whom are tenants, who gathered here today for a discussion of pending agricultural legislation.

Principal speakers were Congressmen Charles L. South of Coleman, 21st district, and Clyde L. Garrett or Eastland, nth district. The meeting was called by J. L.

Wilkinson of Coleman, president of the West Texas Cotton Growers association. Farmers differed slightly as to a plan of financing the farm program. Most of them voiced a desire for a process tax on farm commodities, and others wanted a direct appropriation from congress. Graduated Payments Suggested Solution of present farm displacing many tenants was suggested through graduated payments to farmers and compensation payments under one unit as under the old Bankhcad bill. The number of tenants has been decreasing greatly in recent years in this area, it was pointed out.

Congressman South said: "The problem facing southern cotton farmers today is the greatest in the nation, and a solution will be found only when growers become students of the entire situation." He added more important farm legislation was passed at the laot session of congress than ever before, and thac he felt sure a successful program, would be worked out in the special session beginning Nov. 15. Representative Garrett suggested that further uses of cotton be found and experiment stations for that work be set up. He favored production of better staple cotton and the expanding of a program for that work. No desire for control of per acre yield was expressed, but instead farmers said they wanted improvement of crops through soil conservation measures.

Black Chalk-White "Blackboard" Idea Is Favored By Some; Others Have Doubts As To Value; Glare Possibilities Seen Textile Collection Of Wagners Is Lent To College A textile collection including a part wool Navajo rug which is threaded on an Indian loom has been lent to the clothing and textiles department of Texas Technological college by Dr. and Mrs. C. J. Wagner, said Miss Mabel D.

Erwin, department head. The loom had been exhibited in the Museum of Natural History in New York. The rug is about three- fourths finished. Indians did ths weaving with their fingers, using homespun yarn. The warp is woolen, a distinguishing trait of a geneuine Navajo rug.

The collection will be exhibited part of the time in the clothing and textiles department and part in the museum on the campus. Included are a hand-blocked Persian print hanging, silk shawl from Paris, Paisley shawl, and cashmere scarf. The Paisley shawl was woven on hand looms in Paisley. Scotland, between 1820 and 1870. At least two weavers are required for the complicated process.

The shawls particularly were celebrated between 1805 and the middle of the century. WRONG DRAWER OPENED TTJLSA tsk," sighed Detective Sergeant Lynn Moss, "to steal so much for so little." A business establishment had reported the theft of 1,000 Oklahoma tax $1. By NORMA MILLS Lubbock school officials are doubtful of the value of black chalk and "white blackboards," but they are willing to be shown. This was their expressed reaction to a picture appearing in Tuesday morning's Avalanche illustrating the "white blackboard" idea of Paul F. Born, president of the Elgin, 111., board of education.

Born theorized that a white board with black chalk would tend to the preservation of the pupil's eyesight and brighten and lighten the school room. Dr. J. T. Hutehinson, president of the Lubbock board of education, offered the objection, however, that if the dust of black chalk flies about as it does in the case of the white, it "would get things pretty dirty." He added, however, that if the crayon is a hard substance which will not shatter it might be an improvement.

Dr. Hutehinson said further the board of. education has already given thought to similar suggestions and expressed himself in favor of a thorough investigation of the black chalk- white blackboard idea with reference to Lubbock schools and 1he possible aid to eyesight of the pupil. He wondered, however, whether the white boards would present more objectionable glare than the black. The comment of City Superintendent W.

B. Irvin was that "it seems obvious it would make the schoolroom lighter and more pleasant. He added that last year, tests were made here of yellow crayon on ordinary black boards and did not prove satisfactory in spite of advance assurance that it would improve the usual combination of white on black. "But we are willing to try anything that might be an aid to tht pupil," he declared.
