Heinz corpora tlon's new plant on San Pablo ave nue, In 1327 the H. J. Heinz com pany purchased the property on San Pablo avenue, bounded by Heinz avenue, Ashbjr avenue and the Southern Pacific tracks. Many objections were-brought before the city fathers for allowing them to build an unsightly pickle factory on one of the main thoroughfares. The officiala of the company brought their troubles to the Austin Company of California, experts In the designing of industrial buildings.

Not only must the building be adaptable, to tne most efficient methods of pickling and but it must also be of sufficient beauty to war cant its being placed on San Pablo avenue. lit addition to this it must le completed by July 1 or not at all; It was then February 1. The Austin company staVted the first unit February 7, 1927, July I the plant was ready for operation. This unit consisted of around TOO, 000 square feet of the most up-to-date pickling and canning plant In the United States, including kitchens, boiler houses, labeling rooms, storage- apace and offices.

So much for the plant ltBelf. No effort was spared by the Austin company Jn the" treatment of the front elevation. It Is of Spanish Romanesque design. With its tiled roofs, imitation dobe walls, an- tlqued doorways, wrought Iron grills and massive stone arches, the building gives the appearance of having been transported from Spain by some magic carpet. The problem was solved but not completed.
