By RON KUBOSKI For the first time in 11 games, the Watchung Hills football team has tasted defeat. Unfortunately, for the Warriors, the loss came in the Central Jersey Group IV championship game, as the J. P. Stevens Hawks clawed their way to 14-7 victory.

The Watchung coaching staff, players and fans would like to play the first six minutes of the game over, for it was in that time period that Stevens rolled to a 14-0 lead and threatened to romp to the title. Opening Klckoff Taking the opening kickoff, the Hawks drove 81 yards in 10 plays for a score. The drive was climaxed by a 20-yard touchdown pass from Frank Gresh to Carl Adams. Gregg Chapkowski's kick made it 7-0 Stevens. "On that play they flooded the area and caught us in a stunt," Robert Baly, the Watchung Hills coach said.

Watchung took the ensuing kickoff and appeared tight as it fumbled the ball on the second play from scrimmage. Thirty-six seconds later Nick Sottiriou raced 16 yards around left end for a touchdown. Chapkowski's kick made it 14-0, as the Hawks seemed ready to run Watchung out of Howard A. Tozier field. "Before the game, I felt we were ready, and I was surprised by the way we played early.

We did some things to hurt ourselves, but we adjusted and stopped them," Baly said. The Warrior offense, unable to move the ball in the first quarter, seemed to gain momentum when Scott Laughinghouse recovered a Sottiriou fumble on the Warrior nine yard line. At that point, 10:36 left in the second quarter, Watchung began moving the ball and controlled the rest of the Ehrenkranz Elected To Dem Post NORM PLAINFIELD Leonarp Ehrenkranz was elected president of the Democratic Club here during a recent club meeting. After TkeFuklc After the fumble, the Warriors drove 91 yards in 15 plays. The drive, lasting 5.10, concluded when Dick Coury crossed the goal line on a one- yard plunge. Bill Walsh's kick made it 14-7. Aside from the scoring play, big plays in the drive were two passes from Dave Rebholz to Barry Coriell for a total of 42 yards and two to Pete Palumbo for 24 yards However, Watchung was unable to score the tying touchdown as it squandered numerous opportunities. In The Second Half In the second half, Watchung was driving only to have a 15-yard penalty for an ineligible receiver downfield slow the drive, which ended when Rebholz's pass was intercepted at the Stevens' 49.

The Warrior defense continued to stop the Hawks, who were held to two first downs and 63 total yards in the second half. Contrastingly, the Watchung offense controlled the ball for 41 plays and 14:02 of the half. Another third quarter Watchung drive was stopped at the Stevens' 17 yard line when a fourth down pass fell incomplete. Two plays later Watchung had the ball back on Stevens' 35, as Sottiriou fumbled again But the offense was unable to move past the Hawks' 32 With 5:21 left, Spencer Huston recovered yet another Sottiriou fumble on the Hawks' 34, but on fourth down and ten, Rebholz was sacked trying to pass. Defuse Held The Watchung defense again held, forcing Stevens to punt.

With 1:55 left in the game, Watchung had its last chance with the end zone 73 yards away. What seemed an impossible task became possible as Rebholz completed a third down pass to Coriell for 27 yards. Next came a 17-yard completion to Palumbo over the middle for 17 yards. With just over a minute to go, Watchung was 29 yards away from tying the score and forcing an overtime or making an attempt at a two-point conversion and victory. But it all became conjecture when Stevens' tackle Joe Black intercepted an attempted screen pass from Rebholz, and Stevens ran the clock out with two plays.

That play might haunt Warrior fans for as long as Yaztremski's pop out to end the playoff game with the Yankees will plague Red Sox fans. Hope Gone With the interception went the hopes of a state championship for Watchung, but for J. P. Stevens it was the second consecutive Central Jersey (iroup IV crown, a first for a Middlesex County team. Reflecting on the game this past Sunday, Baly said the interception had run through his mind quite a few times Saturday night.

Watchung accomplished all but one of the goals every high school team sets for itself. Remembering The team is not the 1978 Central (Iroup IV champion, but it is the Mid-state Conference champion, and it provided its followers with many thrills throughout the season. When the emotion of defeat has cleared, the season will be seen and appreciated for all its accomplishments.

Baly reflected, "I'll remember the Piscataway win, how we came back. I'll remember the state tournament victory over Ma- tswan, which was our first ever. Also, we were the only Watchung team to go through the regular season undefeated and untied. (As well as the Mid-state Conference.)
