Alamo Village hosts horse races BRACKETTVILLE A performing Texas Longhorn steer, fast-drawing gunslingers, trick ropers, a Texas-style barbecue and live country music are just some of the highlights of the 34th Annual Labor Day Cowboy Horse Races to be held at Happy Shahan's Alamo Village Movie Location on Labor Day. Gates to Alamo Village, located seven miles north of Brackettville, will open at 9 a.m. Monday, with entertainment beginning at 10:30 a.m. For more information call 210-563-2580.

The Hill Country is playing host to numerous activities this Labor Day Weekend. From music and wine to rodeos and parades, there's sure to be something to please every taste! 1 Jll The first Armadillo World Headquarters Homecoming Concert, Picnic and Ice Cream Social will be held this weekend, featuring concerts Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Austin is known as the "Live Music Capital of the World," and during the 1970's the Armadillo World Headquarters was the live music venue that put Austin music on the map. The Armadillo, though replaced by an office building more than a dozen years ago, is still fondly remember and greatly missed. This Labor Day Weekend event will feature numerous performers who made their mark at the Armadillo.

Kinky Friedman, Turk Pipkin, Jim Franklin and Micael Priest will The 25th annual Kimble Kounty Kow Kick will be held in the Junction city park on Labor Day, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will feature a barbecue plate lunch, a fiddler's contest hosted by the United Fiddlers Association, and the Little Mr. and Little Miss Kimble County contest. Arts and crafts booths will also be set up.

2, 3 and 4, the Cowboy Capital Rodeo Association hosts the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's annual Labor Day rodeo. Discover handcrafted items from a bygone era when the Country Peddler Craft Show makes a stop at Fiesta Texas this Labor Day Weekend, Friday through Monday, in the park's American Parade Campgrounds. More than 100 craftspeople will participate in the four-day fair. Crafts include fashions, dolls, furniture, pottery, jewelry, woodwork, metalwork, fabrics, baskets, wreaths, paintings, stenciling, quilts and carvings, and many others.

Admission to the Country Peddler Harper residents will be celebrating the Labor Day weekend with a Saturday parade and a weekend rodeo complemented by barbecue and evening dances Sept. 3 and 4. The festivities will take place at the Harper Park, located in the heart of Harper at the intersection of Farm-to- Market 479 and U.S. 290. The annual Labor Day parade will step off on Harper's Main Street at 4 p.m.

on Sept. 3. Some 50 entries are expected to include county floats, community floats, civic groups, horses, antique cars, children's bikes, the U.S. Marshal's Posse, trailriders, youth groups, high school organizations and fire departments. According to organizers, the parade will wind down Main Street, near the Harper School, past the Lutheran Craft Show is included free with the price of park admission.

Admission to the show exclusively is $4 for adults, $2 for seniors age 55 and over, and children under 12 are admitted free. Operating hours for the show are 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The Third Annual Kerrville Wine and Music Festival will get under way Friday night at Quiet Valley Ranch, offering three days of music and wine tasting. The celebration will pay tribute to 10 of Texas' finest winemakers and several dozen songwriters from the U.S. and Canada. The event will feature three evening concerts (six to seven hours each) on the main stage, two two-hour concerts and two special wine seminars at the Threadgill Theater in the campgrounds, and three Ballad Tree song sharing gatherings. A Houston's Nymza will provide the finale for the Wine and Music Festival.

The main stage entertainment for the three nights, in order of appearance, is as follows: Friday: Erik Moll, Melissa Javors, Rick Beresford, Paul Kamm and Eleanor MacDonald, Spider John Koerner, Hugh Moffatt, and Brave Combo. Saturday: Bryan Bowers, Bob Franke, Heather Mullen Trio, Tom Russell and Andrew Hardin, George Hamilton Bird Sisters, and Trout Fishing in America.

Sunday: Iris, Walter Hyatt, Peppino D'Agostino, Cosy Sheridan, Dana Cooper, Cafe Noir, Iain Matthews, and Nymza. Advance tickets are $12 Friday, $17 for Saturday or Sunday. Three-day tickets are $40. Friday night's entertainment includes a performance by country singer Kadney Foster. Highlights of the event include arts and crafts booths, two dance areas featuring the top polka and waltz bands in Texas, and a special Sunday performance by Myron Floren of Lawrence Welk fame.

CASTROV1LLE The city of Castroville is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, and events are slated this weekend to honor the town's settlers.
