Oakland that we have architects in our city who are "big men" -men capable of creating such buildings. I am told by those familiar with the erection of large buildings that in the past it has been thought necessary to go into eastern fields for an architect. But now this is ancient history--a thing of the past. We hail the completion of the splendid new bank building as graphic evidence of this fact. Walter D.

All of the vaults are fire-proof, burglar-proof and earthquake-proof. One vault for the storage of coin measures 20 by 61 feet and has walls, ceiling and floor of interwoven steel imbedded in more than two feet of special concrete. This vault is lined throughout with steel and is equipped with chrome steel doors.

The safe deposit box vault and the package vault are 46 by 52 constructed of interwoven steel and concrete with heavy steel plate lining. The safe deposit has a capacity of 18,000 safe deposit boxes. The vault is built of 170 tons of steel and 600 tons of concrete. which called for 3600 sacks of cement in its construction. The circular door giving entry to the safe deposit vault is seven feet in diameter and about two feet thick.

It is made of chrome steel a and is the largest vault. door west of Chicago. Twenty-four great steel bars, each bar over three inches in diameter, hold the door in place until the clocks. locks are released by three Adjoining the vault are 50 private booths and large conference rooms with doors. two.

The locks are so arranged that the doors can be opened from the inside while occupied, but cannot be opened from the outside. When the occupant leaves the booth, the door automatically locks, preventing the disappearance of any valuables left behind by the safe deposit box holder. employe of the department unlocks the door after the box holder departs and examines the booth for valuable papers, if any have been left behind. Lost articles are, by this method, always recovered if left in the booths, bank officials state. A complete a burglar alarm system has been installed in the vaults as well as throughout the banking rooms.

Dictagraphs located in the walls of the vaults are so sensitive as to pick up the slightest. noise and transmit it to police headquarters and two other outside stations. Bank officials say that the dictagraphs are 50 sensitive that, if the dials on the vault doors were turned, the dictagraphs would pick up and transmit the sound of the lock tumblers in the door. reached The safe by a deposit stairway vault at the can left be of the entrance to the main banking floor or by means of a second stairway from the outer lobby of the main building. Ebey will deliver the class president's address. Joint commencement exercises were held in the high school auditorium last night for the nine local grammar schools. One hundred and ninety pupils were graduated. A chosen pupil from each school's graduating class received diplomas for his classmates in a basket from the hands of Walter L. Bachrodt, city superintendent of schools.

Contract to build the new fire house in Maple park has been let by the city trustees to Kent Watson, Matt Sheridan, Matt Rodacker and B. E. Porter for the sum of $4697. Six other building firms put in bids. Work will commence at once.

The successful bid was lower. than the estimate of the city engineer. GILROY NOTES GILROY, June time alloted the Southwest Paving company to sign the street paving contract awarded by this city, expired last week and the papers have not been signed and returned. The city holds the company's bond for $50,000, but SO far no action hag been taken in the way of col-: lection. The council will hold a special meeting at which time street paving will be the sole topic of discussion.

A majority of the members are in favor of leaving the matter to the will of the people. HOME BURNS. The home of Percy Dexter located in the Prunedale district, was completely destroyed by fire causeu from an oil stove. Mrs. Dexter was lighting the stove when some 011 which had been spilled on the floor ignited and almost immediately the house was in flames.

The loss is estimated at $10,000. FOUND DEAD. The body of Ng Sing, a resident of the local Chinatown, was found hanging from the rafters of a shack in the rear of the apple dryer on south Monterey street. The er's jury returned a verdict of suicide. COMPLIMENTSW.
