18 Jan. 20, 1965 Redlands Daily Facts De Gaulle wants change In Atlantic Alliance By JOSEPH W. GRIGG United Press International PARIS are multiplying tliat President Cliarles de Gaulle of France has set his sights on drastic changes in the Atlantic Alliance by 1969. These changes could include pulling France out of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO). They certainly would involve fop to bottom revamping of NATO itself.

One main De Gaulle objectives is to strip of its "integrated" and "supranational" aspects that he finds so objectionable. Another would be to ease the United States out of the NATO driver's that is increasingly irksome to the nationalistically minded old French leader. Why 1969? On April 4, 1969, the North Atlantic Ti-eaty will be 20 years old and 13 provides that from then onwards any member stale can quit on one year's notice. Whether De Gaulle actually would walk out of NATO is not yet certain. He might, for in stance, use the threat as leverage to obtain the drastic revi sion of the treaty he deems essential.

But rebuilding of in line with his own ideas is clearly very much in his mind these days. He has hinted at it in several of his recent semi-annual news conferences. Asked point-blank by newsmen at a New Year's reception the other day whether he planned a NATO walkout, he replied. "I tliink the present form of the Atlantic organization is not destined to last indefinitely. No one thinks it should." After asserting that NATO must be changed, De Gaulie added "but the Atlantic Alliance is another matter.

The al hance e.xists and should last." One reason is that De Gaulle wants to keep France and Europe protected by the immense American nuclear deterrent umbrella, even after N.ATO is revamped and even after his own fledgling French nuclear force becomes more of a reality than today. Goldwater and Richard M. Nixon, the last two Republican presidential nominees, plaii to attend the GOP National Committee meeting at Chicago Friday and Saturday. They were among the five living former presidential candi dates invited to the two-day ga thering. Alfred M. Landon, Thomas E.

Dewey and former President Dwight D. Eisenhower are not expected to attend. Ni.xon is scheduled to preside at a national committee lunch session Friday. A collision between parti sans and critics of Goldwater has been headed off by the announcement last week that Dean Burch would resign the party chairmanship, effective April 1. Burch was installed in the job by Goldwater last July.

However, the national committee meeting is expected to continue the Republican soul searching about ways to come back from its 1964 election ca lamity. STUDEBAKER QUALITY SALES and SERVICE A. C. 13. 20. and 27th. 1965 HOLLYWOOD (UPI) The various events attending President Johnson's inaugural will be all over the television screen today, and if you miss the early action you can catch the inaugural ball on NBC-TV and CBS- TV late tonight. Starting time for the ball on the networks is 11:15 p.m., EST.

Personally, I haven't been invited to didn't have time to write a who would want to leave California anyway when we have such historic political goings-on going on that could present television with one of its greatest challenges. What I am referring to is what you may have already heard about: The fact that, as I understand it, there is a movement in which some northern Californians want to secede from the southern part of the state. As I further understand it. these northern secessionists also want to claim Santa Barbara although that fair city is roughly three times as far from San Francisco as it is from Los This would put Santa Barbara in roughly the same position as West Berlin. It is understood that Southern Californians are trying to arrange a deal in which they would get Sacramento and two bonus football players in ex change.

But what, you ask, has all this to do with television? It is obvious. Some answers follow. To begin with, secessions are LAHGE RUNKEL CHEVROLET '63 CHEVROLET Impala Sport Coupe $2099 Radio, heater, V-8, automatic power steering, white with red inferior. '61 CHEVROLET Nomad Station Wgn. South California would have the overwhelming cultural advantage because it could threaten not to export tlie many television pro grams produced here to north California. And even if one should say "chalk one up for north California," the problem remains. The fact is that the San Francisco Opera will not satisfy everyone. Thus we face the prospect that many northerners may have to tune in secretly with shortwave radios to, say, Radio Free California, to pick up shows with Hollywood stars. Thus we also have to face the prospect that, human nature being what it is, there will soon be pirate ships off the north California coast beaming Hollywood television programs to the culturally deprived.

This, of course, will mean federal gov ernment interference, which is worse than secession. The Channel Swim: CBS-TV's Andy Griffith Show is set for another season but Griffith's series sidekick, Don Knotts, who has movie ambitions, wont be back as a weekly regular CBS-TV's Joey Bishop show is reported virtually certain to be canceled at the end ot lliis season, but he may return in a variety format. Jack Neunran decided lie was going to create and produce television series about five subjects medicine, law, education, politics and big business. Well, Dr. Kildare, Sam Benedict and Mr. Novak have come out of that resolve. And next year you will see The Mayor, and perhaps the following year thei'e will be a big business show.

But it is the status of The Mayor that took me to MGM and Neuman, for this is reputed to be the most pilot film ever shot. "It cost $350,000," said Neuman, who works in Irving Thai berg's old office. "Not exorbit ant. Prices are going up, that's all." The problems confronted by Slaltcry's People haven't discouraged Neuman from attempting his political series. He thinks the CBS program made a mistake in making its hero a state legi.slator "that's too far removed from the people" that's why his protagonist will be a mayor, the Hon.

Robert Chri.slides of a m.ythi- cal, unnamed midwcstern city. The city may be mythical and unnamed, but it is closely patterned after real life. Neumar researched his show carefully, and The Mayor have an office like the one in Denver, an organization like New Haven's, and he'll something like the mayor of Detroit. Robert Colbert plays the part. HILDY, or MRS.

It used to be Hilda Brawner, and under that name she did good things off- Broadway and on New York television. It seems to me that the old name has much more character than the new but that's the nomenclature business. CAROLYN, or THE WANDER.
