This building hat been made possible by many years of hard work, and much sacrifice on the part of th Sisters of Provident. The care of the sick and injured is one of the important tasks undertaken by the Sisters, and soon after the order was established here, they began this work in the old structure at Twenty-sixth and Broadway.

This building was opened in 1904. The old building has been found inadequate for the increasing numbers who sought admission to the hospital, and the building into which they have now moved was started. Much of the important medical and surgical work of the East Bay has been done in this old hospital during the past twenty years. The growth and development of Oakland and its surrounding territory, and the increasing need and demand for more room in their hospital work made it necessary for the Sisters to consider the erection of a larger hos-. pital and one in keeping with the growth of Oakland and the new and improved methods of caring for the sick.

Their to build a new and thoroughly modern hospital was made several years ago. The new hospital is modern and thoroughly equipped in every detail. With plenty of ground room upon which to build, the hospital is placed far enough away from the street so that the noise of traffic will not disturb the patients. The Architect has planned a building not only beautiful in design but, with its central administration portions, and its four wings arranged in a cruciform design. It is so arranged that every room has an outside exposure and each room will have the full benefit of plenty of fresh air and sunlight.

The auxiliary buildings which house the engine rooms, with its heating and ventilating systems, the lighting ice plant, laundry, make the hospital complete within itself to carry on the varied work necessary in the running of a modern hospital. In the hospital proper will be found an arrangement that is not only pleasing in appearance and comfortable for the patient but there are all the modern and proven equipment for receiving, examining, treating, and earing for the sick and injured, that is used in the best hospitals. A new and modern nurses' home to accommodate one hundred and fourteen nurses will be ready for occupancy at Christmas time. In planning the hospital and its equipment the Sisters, and their advisers spent much time in studying details in many of the newer hospitals throughout the United States. In the opening of this new hospital, the people of Oakland can feel that they will find here everything that is necessary in a well-equipped hospital, for the safety, comfort, convenience and treatment of the sick and e.
