The story of the manner In which a father crirpled his son to keep him fcom fighting for the kaiser was told on the witness stand in supreme court by Conrad Johannstn, 34, of Vonk-ers. Johannsen was testifying in his d.imaee suit against the Atlantic Transport company of West Virginia. He said that his eyesight was permanently impaired last March when the mate of a vessel on which he was a accidentally Mruck him over the head with a sledge hammer. Photographs in evidence revealed scars on Johannsen's back. In telling how he came to bear the marks he said that in 1914 he was living in a German town and that his father, a citizen of Denmark, was opposed to Germany's declaration of war.

One night soon after, Johannsen said, his father called him and, suddenly drawing a butcher knife cut his back from his neck tu the end of his spinal column, exclaiming: "Now, you'll never be able to fight for the Kaiser," The war was almost over before he recovered from the injury, he said. His testimony ended the case, for immediately after Johannsen settled his suit for $1000. block. Dobhs had testified that he had one arm around a girl and that he generally drove that way. 1 1 IUI 11 in VJ.
