Several unsuccessful attempts' at working out a method for solving the problems wpre made and rejected. One method which proved unfeasible teas an attempt to draw the lines in the puzzh so that every city on the map would be cov ered.

Henry Johnson, the first prize winner, tried this, but concluded that it was impracticable. He then endeavored to cover as many as were possible, leaving out, only cities of small population. He finally worked out his solution at one sitting, after hours of concentration.
