SMITH, General PassoDgrr Ageirt jan30 General 8. W. Agent. The Crusaders and Saloon-Keep- ers in the Folice Court Rooms. Great Interest Manifested iu the Test Cases Between the Two.

Parties. What the Temperance Women Hare Done, and What They Intend to Do. ueciaraiion OI Har Dy JenniSOD, and the Other Saloon Keepers. How They Have Organized for Their Own Protection. The rush for the Police Court rooms yes terday morning ret embied, in a a great de gree, the famous Granger procession.

It was the day appointed for the meeting of the crusaders and ssleem keepers, and aa every aa knew the conflict wbs to be a ouirance, they were, of course, anxious to be in at the death of one or both of the parties. Lcnz before the first case was called, the contract ed Courtrooms were FILLED TO OVERFLOWING, and the surging crowd pressed up the stairs outside till not a foot of standing room was left: While the bglated ones, on outride, were cursing their ill luck at not being able to get in, the sweltering, swaying mass pack ed behind the railing were groaning in spirit because they could not gel out, and the sultry air was burdened with suppressed profanity, as some miserable being drew his crushed corns frem beneath the grinding heel ot a huge cow hide boot. In? ide of THE CHARMED CIRCLE sat the judge, police official, prisoners, crusaders, salocn keepers, and all those imme diately interested in the trial. About fifteen ladies orcupkd one of the benches and look ed as dignified and sedate as it was possible for a body of women to look under such circumstances. Abe saloon keepers were out in full force, all intensely interested ia the result, for it would either'grant them A NEW LEASH OP LIFE, or else put an effectual quieiut on their business.

This fact they comprehended full well. After order had bee a restored the uage iook nis pi ace sua me court was i a opened for business. Several cases involv ing testimony wnich would not be very agreeable to the ladie3 present, were dia-inlsad, and the brazen nymphs who wanted to stand a trial out'of PURE CTJSSEDNESS were sent below to relate their tale of ob scenity on the morrow. When the name of Thomas Cusick, charged with the Sunday law, was read from'the docket, there was a visible stir and commotion among the crusaders. This was their man.

In him they had more than an ordinary inter est. For him they had not only PRAYED FOR BUT WATCHED, and their watching resulted in finding him violating the Sunday law by allowing cards to be played in his saloon on the Sabbath, and also selling intoxicating drinks. On their cath that he was guilty of a misde meanor the warrant had been issued for his arrest, and they alone were responsible for his appearance before the Police Tribunal. Cusick seemed to accept the situation with calmness, and after the case had been stated asked tor a continuance till next which was granted. jennison and his "kino" next claimed the attention of the court.

The night before the "Saratoga" had been notined to close ana me proprietor to appear before the crusaders. He came sur rounded by bis courtiers with a grand flour ish of trumpets and many honied and com plimentary words for lady friends'' who had so kindly invited him to rise and explain THE WHEREFORES of bu psculiar business. When his case was called he asked a continuance for ten days in oider that he might summon the witnesses necepsiry to prove the principal points in the defense which he intended to make. He admitted that he had been a gambler for some years, but did not claes "xeno" under that head, and expected to prove that THE SAME GAME (or which is the twin sister of was played in the verv houses of the women bringing the prosecution. In his de fense he intended to prove that his house was not a gambling house thaf.it was frequented by men and women; that church services had been held, there that many re spectable and high toned citizens took their meals there; and moreover that it was to a certain extent tolerated by the city govern ment.

After considerable dissuasion the de fense was given ten days in which to summon witnesses and prepare for trial. Jenni- on declares his intention of GIVING THE PROSECUTION A GAME, which ill prove very interesting. He eays he intended to close out the "keno" room on the first of the month, and had made an arrangement with the mayor, city attorney and marshal to tolerate it till that time. But the Crusaders could not wait. They went to the city attorney and demanded a warrant for Lis arrest.

Filzwilliams told them it was no uee to issue a warrant as the establishment would be closed as per agreement. The crusaders went to the mayor and the mayor sent them back to the city atterney, who FLED THE OFFICE to get rid them. But again they came the next day and were so importunate that to save his back hair the unfortunate man wac 'obliged lo issue lh warrant, although he did it under protest. He told them it would answer every purpose to have the es tablishment on the firt of the month, but the irrepressible crusaders would have none of it. THEY WANTED THE CREDIT of clewing the Saratoga themselves, and have it they would if persistency and continued clamor would be the means of bringing it about.

Now that they have shouldered the elephant Jennison says "he means to make them carry it till the very weight bears them to the earth. In connection with the saloon keepers he intends to fight them to the bitter end; "keno" will be played till the first of the month." IP MEJt" HAVE TO BE HIRED to sit at the table and place the button. As witnesses in the casa now nendini? he has summoned thirty two person seventeen of them women and nesrly 11 of them crusaders' When the pers are served there will bs a commotion in many a household in this city. Ladies of well known respecta bility will be called upon to testify at the police court rooms, and if they, fail to ap -Fur somothint nice. tylisa and anything go to Wollmaa.
