8 166 Val ley St. Providenoe. R.I. O89O9 Quarterback Matt McDowell scored two second-half touchdowns Sunday to lead the Chatham Township squad to a 200 win over the Chatham Boro Cardinals. McDowell scored on a one- yard sneak in the third period and on a 19-yard draw in the fourth.

Fullback Andy Jarvis had scored the Thunder bird's first six- pointer in the first period on a one-yard plunge. The Cardinals opened the game as if they would score fairly easily. After recovering a Thunderbird fumble at the Township 44, backs Bill Palmer, Mike Vespasiano and Paul Carroll ground out 16 yards on successive runs. But linebacker Steve Taglienti dropped Paul Geary for no gain at the 33 and on the next play Jarvis pounced on a Boro fumble at the 25. Backs Mark Giuliano and Glen Dyer, using blocks by center Danny Garreau and tackles Mike Miller and Danny Pelosi, then spearheaded a six-play flemingtonfurs FABULOUS But AA 111 I I I i ntury, RARE-VALUE PRICED FROM S345 TO $14,500.

drive which ended with Jarvis' plunge. Penalties hurt both teams throughout the game. In the second period the Cardinals had good field position at their own 41. But twj straight procedure penalties and a dip put the ball back to the 19, nullifying runs by quarterback Pat Palmer and a Palmer-to-Perry pass. Clips voided runs of 31 and 26 yards, the second for an apparent touchdown, by Dyer in the fourth.

Interceptions likewise haunted the Cardinals. Defensive back Billy Toth picked off a Palmer pass late in the second quarter stopping a march at midfield. Back John Simon grabbed another Palmer attempt in the fourth and, following blocks by end Rob Larabee and linebacker Terry Tagliareni, returned it to the Boro 35. McDowell scored the clincher three plays later. Thunderbirds John Farrell and Craig Miele were outstanding on defense while Ken Rutherford and Steve Casnocha anchored the Cardinals.

Booters Reach Tournament Semi-Finah' The Chatham Township Division III Travelling Soccer Team continued its quest for the New Jersey State Youth Cup with a 1-0 victory over the Howell Pinelanders. This win moved the Tdwnship eleven into the tournament semifinals as just four teams remain from an original field of 53. The exciting match was decided with Just three minutes on the clock when Charlie McGuth worked the ball loose on the right side and passed to John Hahn in the center of the field. Hahn lofted the ball over the on- charging goalkeeper from about 18 yards out for the game's only score. Goalkeeper Jeff Anderson turned in several fine saves in registering his second consecutive tournament shut-out.

On Sunday in a return to Northern Counties League action, the Division III squad had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Millburn. The Township goal came on a close-in shot by Charlie McGuth. Gerri Feinsod at 376-4735. By Linda Budd The Chatham Township High School Field Hockey Team are co-owners of the Group I State crown by virtue of a 0-0 deadlock with a South Hunterdon squad on Saturday. The local girls earlier in the week defeated Newton, 3-2, for the Northern title, are the Sectional Division champs and co-title holders of the Colonial Hills Conference with Mendham In discussing the winning season, coach Gail Chesnut said, "The girls worked very hard all season. They played particularly well in this State contest and the title is well deserved." In the State title contest, both teams opened with aggressive play with South Hunterdon given a slight advantage in that they were able to hinder the Gladiator attack. During the second half, however, the South Hunterdon dominance was halted as the Chatham girls put pressure on the opponent's defense.

The game, fast and superbly executed, featured long smooth passes by forwards Sheryl Bedell, Melanie Padovano and Patty Gallacher. When Hunterdon maflgtd to pass the Glad halfbacks, they were met by an iron wall of girls dressed in blue paced by Barbara Gill and Ellen DriscoU. Stickwork perfection and stupendous plays highlighted the second half as well. Gallacher stopped a sure goal after two saves by goaltender Julie Foley. The forward line of Leanne Harris, Vanessa Mello, Fran Longmire, Sue Marano and Judy Tooher made 22 attempts on goal but were turned back either by the Hunterdon fullbacks or their goalie.

With a 0-0 tie at game's end, two overtime periods followed. Defenses of both squads were outstanding holding back all attacks at the goal. The decision was made that both teams earned a championship title. South Hunterdon won the toss and so will keep the trophy for six months after which it will be on display in the C.T.H.S. trophy case.

In the Newton game, Chatham threatened from the first bully. Each attack was stunted by the Newton defense. During the remainder of the half, both teams played outstandingly with play concentrated between the 25-yard lines. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie showing balance of power. The second half seemed a replay of the first with neither team managing a tally, thanks especially to the goaltending of Julie Foley who made two fantastic saves.

Two overtime periods produced no goals. The decision was to be made by penalty strokes. Each team chose five players who would alternatively shoot on the opposing goalkeeper. The best of five shots would win. Representing the Gladiators were Leanne Harris, Vanessa Mello, Sue Marano, Patty Gallacher and Melanie Padovano.

Mello tallied first for Chatham after which Newton hit the twines. Two goals were added by Melanie Padovano and Leanne Harris. Only one other Newton goal gave the locals a 3-2 victory and the Northern crown. The winning season is the result of teamwork displayed by the squad as well as to leadership of coach Chesnut who en- couraged the team working as hard as the players. It takes a strong, determined coach to make a great team.

Special credit too should go to goalie Jolie Foley who, though she had never played field hockey before, attended camp last summer. In one contest, she was credited with ten defensive saves; her season record is 45 saves and an accumulation of 12 shutouts. Vanessa Mello was top scorer with 22; she was followed by Sue Marano with 13. High assists go to Vanessa Mello with 13 and Fran Longmire, n. The season record was 143-4.
