Girls Netsters Wear State Crown The Chatham High School Varsity Girls Tennis Team are holders of the 1976 Group I State title after their victory over a tough Holmdel team by a 3-2 margin last week in Princeton.

It was only the second loss in the season for the Holmdel netsters who ended with a 19-2 record. The Eskies (17-2) were fired up for their first State competition. In the opening match, sophomore Jenny Sacco (11-8) walked off the court with the first win for the Boro, 6-3, 6-2. Second singles senior Nancy McSurely (14-5) played a long hard match losing closer than the score would indicate. Second doubles duo of Cindy Deatly and Kim Eisele (12-4-1), both freshmen, upped the Eskie chances with a 7-6, 6-4 Meetings This Week Tonight: Twp Bd.

Needing just one more match, Eskie senior Judy Mapletoft (17-2) lost only her second match of the season 6-4, 6-3, in a heartbreaker which saw many fine long rallies. A victory depended on the first doubles squad of junior Jean Spinner and sophomore Cheryl Krukowski (15-4).

They took the first set handily, 64. The outlook brightened for the Eskie netsters before Holmdel rallied to win the next set 3-6. The third set saw Holmdel ahead 5-2 with about six match points against Chatham. Spinner and Krukowski buckled down winning that game and collecting the next four easily giving the state crown to the Eskies. Not only had the Spinner- Krukowski pair pulled out the State title match, but they also won the deciding contest when the Eskies played Kinnelon in a second round State match.

The girls had wrapped up a winning season by defeating Chatham Township 5-0 for the Colonial Hills Conference title; bested Cedar Grove 4-1 for the North Section II title; before their 3-2 victory over Holmdel for the Group I crown. Though coach Bruce Humphrey will lose two outstanding netsters due to graduation, he is optimistic about a winning season in 1977.
