Phillips replies, "That's what my girlfriend said when I punched her with it." In addition to Phillips, who had "Public Enemy" added to the "1" on his jersey, the cartoon also depicted Christian Peter, No. 55, and Riley Washington, No. 3, surrounding a smiling coach Tom Osborne, who is holding a trophy inscribed "The Osborne Trophy, Most Assaults, Robberies, Arrests." Washington is charged with attempted murder after an August shooting at a Lincoln, convenience store, and Peter was convicted of misdemeanor sexual assault for grabbing a woman at a Lincoln, bar in 1993. From Sun News Services UCLA: Big weekend Continued from CI ter Mario Bennett (now with the Phoenix Suns), even though they have the Nos. 2 and 3 scorers in the conference Ron Riley and Jeremy Veal, both averaging 19.8 points per game. What makes them dangerous to UCLA, though, is their press. ASU is the only Pac-10 team that includes full-court pressure as a major part of its nightly game plan, and the Bruins without a true point guard unless injury-impaired sixth man Cameron Dollar is on the floor are suspect ball-handlers. The last time they faced a pressing team Maryland in the Wooden Classic last month the Bruins committed 29 turnovers, although they did win.

"We expect (ASU) to press," Harrick said. "We've been susceptible to that." Still, Harrick feels a lot better about his team's ability to handle pressure than he did, say, before the Maryland game. At that time, the Bruins were 2-3 their worst start since the Walt Hazzard years in the 1980s and had fallen out of the national rankings. Harrick says now that he had no idea where the team was headed. "We didn't know who we were," he said.

"We had no identity." They've found one in the last month and projected themselves back into the national picture. If they play well enough to maintain or improve their current ranking, they figure to earn an NCAA Tournament seeding as one of the top four teams in one of the four regionals. "A month ago, we were thinking, 'Can we go to the tournament? Are we even good enough to get Harrick said. "Now, we've gotten ourselves back in the hunt to where we're trying to get seeded. "We've kind of come from nowhere." The ragged 73-63 victor); over Maryland on Dec.

11 turned out to be a springboard to the longest winning streak in the Pac-10 this season. But Harrick said the key game was the one before that an 85-70 loss at then-No. 2 Kansas on Dec. 2, when the Bruins took a 19-point first-half lead before being outscored by 30 in the second half. "That was a turnaround game for us," Harrick said, "because of that first half.

Not many teams can get Kansas 19 down on their floor. It showed we could play with the top teams." Another turning point, he added, was Saturday's 93-73 victory over California, breaking the Bears' three-game Pauley Pavilion winning streak. "That gives us the confidence of knowing we can play with anybody in the league," Harrick said. Redlands nips Caltech to halt 7-game slide TheSun PASADENA Junior 6-3 guard Steve Reed scored 17 points and 6-5 senior center Lee McPeak added 16 as the University of Redlands edged Caltech 62-59 Wednesday, snapping a seven-game losing streak. Redlands improved to 1-2 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, 4-10 overall.

Caltech is 0-3 and 4-8. The game was tied at halftime, but Redlands pulled out to a nine-point advantage in the second half. Caltech, winless in the SCIAC in the 90s, scored at :04 to get within three points. WC edges Barstow The Sun VICTORVILLE Wallace Harris' running lay-up with 34.2 seconds left snapped a tie as Victor Valley College defeated Barstow 83-77 in a Foothill Conference Northern Division game Wednesday before 100 at VVC. Larry Treadwell led WC (1-0 Northern Division, 11-14 overall) with 19 points.

Harris scored 16 and teammate Sean Warr added 12. Barstow (0-1, 15-8) led 75-71 with less than two minutes left. Antifreeze Gallon REG. 4.99 Trak Sale Price 3.88 1.00 Mfr. Mail-In Rebate 88 REG.

Interleague play was unanimously ap-; proved by baseball's ruling executive council during a meeting that ended late Tuesday night. The plan needs the approval of 21 of the 28 teams, and owners may vote as soon as today. "Interleague play, which has long been a of mine, is one step closer to fruition," acting commissioner Bud Selig said. There doesn't appear to be much opposition among owners.

The plan, which calls for interleague games for each team, also must be approved by the Major League Base- ball Players Association. CAMBVS HEART IS FINE: Doctors still don't know why Marcus Camby collapsed, but tests have ruled out heart trouble, and the top player for No. 1 Massachusetts. is expected to be released from the hospital to-" day. There was no evidence of a brain tumor or stroke, and tests for drugs and toxic substances were negative, Dr.

Gerald Steinberg, chief Imedical officer of University of Massachusetts Medical Center, said in a statement. Doctors are awaiting the results of some tests, and by the end of the week enough infor-: mation should exist for Camby, his doctors and coach John Calipari to discuss when he might resume playing. INA, DUNGJEN TAKE PAIRS LEAD: The spirited performance of Kyoko Ina and Ja- son Dungjen edged the elegant but flawed skating of defending champions Jenni Meno and Todd Sand in the pairs short program in the U.S. Skating Championships at San Jose. The short program is worth one-third of the total score.

Earlier, Elizabeth Punsalan and Je-rod Swallow pulled ahead of rivals Renee Roca and Gorsha Sur after the second of three stages of the original dance competition. WOODSON PRACTICES WITH STEELERS: Rod Woodson again talked of playing in the Super Bowl after practicing with the Pittsburgh Steelers defense for the first time since badly Injuring a knee in September. But while Woodson was enthused about the improvement in a right knee that required reconstructive surgery only 18 weeks ago, coach Bill Cowher remained noncommittal at best. LALAS CAPTURES AWARD: Alexi Lalas, a leading defender on the U.S. na-; tional team who also plays for Club Padova in Italy, was voted the 1995 Honda Player of the Year, a honor that annually goes to the top professional soccer player in the United States.

Lalas, who finished second twice in the balloting in previous years, received 209 points, including 52 first-place votes, in voting by a panel of sports journalists from around the country. Midfielder John Harkes was second. BRIEFLY NOTED: F. Don Miller, who helped the U.S. Olympic Committee emerge from the turmoil of Cold War confrontation to become a multimillion-dollar sports giant, died Wednesday night in Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was 75. The Houston Astros signed outfielder Derrick May to a one-year, $750,000 contract The Baltimore Orioles signed pitcher Alan Mills and infielder Jeff Huaon to one-year con- tracts First baseman John Jaha signed a one-year, contract with the Brewers. Green Bay Packers assistant Gil Haskell is alert and his memory is improving, but doctors said it's still too early to predict his progress.
