Bob uole fancies oatmeal at breakfast an A rnivi -in v-orrtiN re i mns hofnrn haA I but you didn't I ear it here. I As the reserved I uoie takes on the confessional Bill Clinton in this record lest they draw a glare from Dole. "He has oatmeal nearly every time for breakfast. Once in a while he'll splurge and have hotcakes," divulged one friend, who hastened to add, "Remember, I don't want my name attached to that." At work in the Capitol, Dole eats lunch at his desk.

"Usually some kind of soup," said another associate, again on condition of anonymity. Cocktails? "One drink, never two. Vodka and onion juice." Whatever other tidbits can be pried loose picture the 72-year-old Dole as a capital insider who orbits within a two-mile-wide circle in downtown Washington. On the eastern border of Dole's world is his Capitol office 20 paces from the Senate chamber and appointed in jade green, the color of his wife, Elizabeth's, eyes. Two photographs of her plus an oversized cutout of their miniature schnauzer, Leader are the only personal mementos on display.

Leader himself spends his days at Mrs. Dole's office at campaign headquarters. To the west is the Doles' condominium at The Watergate Washington's power address on the Potomac River. On the way to the elevators, residents can just as easily pick up their dry cleaning as a $5,000 gown from the Vera Wang boutique. Because Dole travels so frequently, his Watergate neighbors have a sort of joint custody arrangement to care for Leader.

Sunday mornings frequently find Dole espousing his "faith" Washington style on the network TV talk shows then branching at one of several downtown hotels with Mrs. Dole, a capital insider herself, having held two Cabinet posts and a White House staff job before taking the helm of the American Red Cross. Among Dole's favorite D.C. detours: Mr. K's, a Chinese restaurant whore the eggrolls are priced at $5.50 apiece and presented on gold-plated dinnerware; and Brooks whose tailors fit Dole's suits to mask his shattered right side, injured in World War II.

The remains of former CIA Director William Colby were buried with military honors Monday at Arlington National Cemetery. After a private memorial service for family and friends, an urn bearing Colby's ashes was transported by horse-drawn caisson to its final resting place in a clearing surrounded by maple and pine trees.

Army marksmen fired a 21-gun salute, and a bugler played Taps as a Hag from the caisson was folded and presented to Colby's wife, Sally Shelton-Colby. inenas ana aides n0e are unanimous in their counsel that the Senate majority leader needs to loosen up nd show his personal side. The test could provide a way to determine if severe memory loss is due to Alzheimer's or to a treatable disorder, said Dr.

Jay H. Robbins, a National Cancer Institute researcher who led a team that developed the test. "This test could be useful in identifying the disease absolutely in patients who are diagnosed as probable Alzheimer's disease," said Robbins. "Many people who have blood relatives with the disease might want to know. The decision, for instance, could be important for family planning." So far, the test has only been conducted experimentally with frozen cells from a few dozen patients.

Much more research is needed before the test could be used generally on patients. Robbins said. A report on the research is to be published Tuesday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's also could give a boost to researchers now struggling to develop drugs for the disorder, said Dr. Zaven Khachatuarian, director of the Alzheimer's Association Ronald and Nancy Reagan Research Institute.

Khachatuarian said that drugs ranging from hormones to anti-in-flamatories to calcium channel blockers are being studied and all of these could be effectively tested only on people who are confirmed to have Alzheimer's. "Our ability to detect the disease early will be very important in developing these therapies," he said. Early detection will be even more important once drugs are developed, said Khachatuarian, because "Alzheimer's may start as early as 40 years before symptoms show up and this means that to slow down the progression of this disease, we need to be able to detect it and treat it early." The Alzheimer's Association estimates that at least 4 million Americans, including former President Reagan, suffer from Alzheimer's. Its symptoms include a gradual loss of memory and eventual failure of all other body functions. Although done only in the lab so far, the test does show that the skin and blood cells of Alzheimer's disease patients have fundamental differences that can be detected before symptoms of the disease become apparent.

It's the kind of volunteerism embraced by President Clinton, but Perlyn started the. program on his own not because he was required to do it by his school. In a commencement speech Fri-" day at Pennsylvania State University, Clinton urged every middle school and high school to make public service part of the curriculum. He also urged colleges to use federal funds to orient college work-study toward community service.

He said the government would match community grants up to $500 to reward high school students who do significant work for their communities. But critics contend that requiring students to perform community service is "mandatory volunteering" and unconstitutional. Lawyers with the Institute for Justice are filing a Supreme Court challenge this week. Staff attorney Scott G. Bullock shares the president's desire to build strong, interconnected communities, but says the "hallmark of community is volunteerism." Perlyn agrees.

He is graduating this year from Pine Crest School, which does not have a community service requirement. He started the nonprofit "Stepp'n Up" on his own and thinks helping others should come from the heart. Making it mandatory might result in more students becoming lifelong community servants, he says. "By requiring it, it takes away some of the special feeling you get," said Perlyn, who worked with shoe manufacturers and local stores to provide shoes to more than 5,000 children. Perlyn was one of about 100 youth volunteers who traveled to Washington last week to receive, The Prudential Spirit of Communi-' ty Award.

"Volunteering is not really volunteering unless you're doing it because you want to," says fellow award winner Anisa Kintz, 13, a student at Whittemore Park Middle School in Conway, S.C. He had left called "tell-tale signs of spiritual relapse and physical exhaustion." The rapid turn of events had prompted questions about Barry's fitness as mayor and whether he might have returned to alcohol or drug abuse. Barry has denied renewed drug or alcohol problems. At a combined rally and news conference, attended by about 150 supporters, Barry declared Monday: "I come back rested, with more energy, with clearer vision and more determined than ever before to transform our D.C.

government." Barry, who spent six months in jail in 1991-92 on a misdemeanor cocaine conviction, sought to reassure district residents he has the ability to lead the troubled city and its 567,000 residents. The 17 days he spent at retreats in rural Maryland and St. Louis renewed his faith in himself and the city, Barry said. "I am better prepared and better able to govern. I'm all right.

I'm ready to move forward." The mayor said Monday what troubled him was that he had begun missing weekly Alcoholics Anonymous meetings while putting in 16-hour days at work and lying awake at nights. $9S mysteriously ana Barry on short, April 27 in i search of solitude and recovery from what he at the time first pair complete, frame with single vision plastic or glass lenses lYOHnnnrounnl pHp3 PHONES ON AIL CALLING PLANS VFffSjS PEAK UNLIMITED Ibmmd WEEKEND AIRTIME additional pairs same prescription, same visit CALL FOR DETAILS fm rebate for swltchli hka to CELLULAR IMAGE.
