"Hope springs eternal in the human breast," says the poet, and so it is with the hen man. This one sunny day has kindled the slumbering spark, and the fellow who has a few chicks to turn out to bask in the sunshine of this April day feels that he may yet have a few early fries or show birds.

There is no end to the fun that the ohioks get out of it as they skip about among the yonng alfalfa "seeking whom they may devour." Let them run. So long as it is not cold and cloudy they are better for a little exeroise. More birds are killed with kindness than from having to rustle for themselves. We have often read that a ohick that can't get out of the shell alone is not worth helping out, and after a "good deal of experimenting, have come to the same oonolusion. We have four such now that have been trying to live for three days, but they need help to draw their breath.

Mr. Bennett, of Golden Wyandotte fame, tells a strong story about the hardiness of his birds. He says that a setting of eggs, after' being deserted three times by as many hens, for a period of twenty-four hours, were three days before hatching time, distributed among four other setting hens, and every egg hatched. This is an unusual occurrence, but Mr. Bennett is too old to draw on his imagination, so we shall have to accept it as gospel truth.

In our desire to have our mated birds looking well and doing well, we are very apt to overfeed them regardless of the oon sequences Judging from the several poultry yards whioh we have visited in the past few months it seems to be more easy to overfeed than to underfeed. In almoBt every case we found the birds too fat, es pecially the hens and cooks, it being easier to fatten the older birds. If we want eggs, especially fertile eggs, we must not let onr birds get fat. A fat eook or oockerel is of no use in a breeding pen, and very fat hens if they lay at all, will lay deformed or infertile eggs as a rule. When we find they are fattening, one half the ration of corn or fattsning food should be supplied and more exeroise given.

We find that bran and kaffir corn, equal parts, scalded and fed warm in the morning on three or four inches of straw or any olean litter, keep the birds busy longer and make them work harder than anything we have tried vet, exoept perhaps millet seed. This is also a fine egg food. We are feeding for fertile egg produc tion in our breeding pens and hope to find a larger per cent of eggs fertile and hatch a larger per cent of strong, vigorous chicks than ever before. We must keep the birds at work. Do not feed them if they will not work.

'Make them soratch, for upon scratching depends their health and fertile eggs. Do not feed more than twice a day; no hen will scratch end work if fed too often. Regulate the food by the weather, on warmer days less corn or fats, colder days more, but oorn and wheat and all fattening foods should be need judicious ly. Vary the food -as much as possible. Among the foods that are highest in egg production are bran, oats, clover hay oral falfa, skim milk, beef or green cut bone Thee rank very high as egg producing food, but may by injudicious use do more harm than good.

No matter how much we may know about how to feed onr own flock, no form ula can be put on paper that will do all flocks or breeds. No two birds are alike, even if closely related, and the different breeds differ widely; therefore eaoh breeder should carefully study his own flock to know just what they need to keep them in perfect health, which means fertile eggs and plenty of them.
