CLEAN HAJTDS BABEED. Southern Pacific Adopted Ealing; for Trainmen. Upon the wash pan officials of the Southern Pacific railroad tiave loaded the blame for scores of accidents aggregating In loss thousands of dollars. Now, If orders are obeyed, soap and water will go flying out of the window of every caboose on the Harriniaa system, and the trainman who reports with clean hands will get his discharge papers all smudged over with disgrace. Investigation has resulted in tha development of the fast that tha crash of accidents In terminal yards has usually been accompanied by the splash of water while trainmen are rubbing the grime off their hands and faces.

When conductors and brakemen have their faces in the suds soap suds anything may happen. The order abolishing the wash pan originated on the Union Pacific. It was the invention of a superintendent, who had been driven to distraction by things tlint happened In the yards. Since then It has gradually spread over the entire system until now the man who steps from a freight train at tha end of his run and can not write his name with the end of his finger on the side of the depot might as well go write his resignation cn sweet-scented note paper and mail lt to "the old man." Under the terms of tha new order clean hands are hereafter a 'deficiency." Tbe trainman who Is not made up as a chimney awasp ia "out of the Via H. T.
