in June SUSAN DELACOURT OTTAWA BUREAU Sen Hugh Segal is bowing out of his job in the Senate and taking up new duties as the master of Massey Col lege at the University of Toronto Segal Ls the third Conservative sen ator in the past month to announce his early departure from a chamber that has been embroiled in scandal for most of tliis year a proponent of Senate reform I have spoken in favour of term limits as a feasible start to this Segal said in a statement issued Thursday night 2014 would mark my ninth year in the Senate and the time is Sen Hugh Segal who was appointed to the Red Chamber Segal parted company with a Con servative sponsored bill earlier this year that would have required labour unions to disclose salaries and spending for instance But his largest display of indepen dence came when he balked at Con servative spearheaded measures to punish senators Pamela Wallin Mike Duffy and Patrick Brazcau Segal a long time friend of steadfasUy resisted the idea that Uie Senate should be judge and jmy in Uie long running controversy over expenses in the chamber notion that we would move to a sentencing process which Ulis mo tion is is just completely unfair and a violation mayor left me with no choice He made perhaps the most defamatory and vile insinuation pos sible pointedly said days later that he stands by and then re peated his false and malicious claims in an interview today on American Dale who independently decided to file tiie notice is pursuing the ac tion with the full financial support of Uie Toronto Star Star editor Michael Cooke said the paper will continue to support Dale this entire upsetting or deal Daniel Dale hits never once wa vered in liis professionalism He of course will stay in his role at city hall Why would he be punished because tiie mayor has chosen to make vile and baseless accusations against Cooke said forward with legal action was decision alone But I admit I look forward to the day where the mayor is made to swear on a
