James S. Forbis, former Senator from Guilford, haa announced tliat lie will be a candidate for tlie Senate in the primaries tonight and tomorrow against Senator James D. Glenn, all other candidates having withdrawn. Mr. Forbis comes out in a card at tlie eleventh hour and says lie lias been prevailed upon by hosts of friends to make the race.

About eighty warrants hava been issued for persons who failed to boy dog tags and so far as the cases hava been heard they bring a dog tag every time as well aa tlie cost of the liras-, ecution. Tlie police have tlie names of many more who hava failed to pur-diase tags and they will be hauled np if it takes all winter. A tag easts a dollar; a tag and a warrant costs at least $1.60. Tlie Secretary of State today chartered tha Carolina and Tennessee Southern Railway Company, which proposes to construct a railroad from Franklin, Macon county to some point on tha Tennessee line, near where tlie Little Tennessee river crosses tlie line. N. C. Todays convention will be called to order at 10 o'clork. A temporary organisation will be effected and the necessary committees appointed and an adjournment taken until perliape one o'clock. There will probably be some contest before the committee on resolutions end perhaps over tlie permanent organisation.

Thera are two candidates for State Senator A. II. Btler and F. T. Baldwin.

A large number of candidates will likely be named for tlie House of Representatives, but tlie re were no pronounced candidates at a late hour last night. For Clerk -of tlie Circuit Court there are four candidates Mayor O. B. Eaton, 8. T.

Besseut. It was thought for some time that there would be no eppost ion to tlie re-nomination of Messrs. Alspaugh Lindsay and Riggins, bnt Mr. D. 1 King yesterday announced that lie was a candidate for Treasurer and there was a report last night tliat a dark house candidate for Sheriff would pranoe oat on tha track this morning.

Messrs. Ilanes, Wharton and Shore are receptive candidates for renomination but are making no efforts in tlieir own behalf. Tlieir friends, however, will lie active today and tlie opposition is divided. PLEASANT PARTY. Mrs.

Day entertained at her home on Spruce street last night from 8 until 11 o'clock, in honor of her guest, Miss lone Yancey, of Oxford. There were about thirty invited guests and a moat pleasant evening waa enjoyed by those present. Miss Rose Dean and Mr. Jasper Dean favored tlis party with soma beautiful selections and with games and social converse tha time sped swiftly by. Delicious refreshments were served.

Douthit, of Salem, who waa made chairman of the citisens committee appointed to interview Messrs. Glenn end Watson in regard to a compromise, told The Journal last night tliat his committee had met and conferred with friends of both gentlemen. Mr. Watson was out of town, bnt the committee reoeived a positive statement from Mr. Glenn that he would not retire from tlie race as he considered his chances of success too good to abandon.

Mr. Donthita committee will meet again this merning and endeavor to bring about a compromise. KID BASE BALL The Winston Kid team defeated a combination team of Salem, North Winston and Rough and Ready youngsters yesterday by a score at IS to 11. Bailey and Blackburn and Reniger and Barnes were the opposing VERY SUCCESSFUL. Pastor Ritchie Highly Pleased the Missionary Convention.

This Mission was one of interest, mncli enthusiasm was manifested. Rev. Smith, President of the Mission Board of the United Synod, mads a strong plea for more mission work in our large and growing cities in the Southland. A resolution of thanks for tlie enjoyable trolley ride given by tlie ladies of the church was unanimously adopted by the convention. Minutes of the several meetings were read and approved.

Mt. Pleasant, N. was chosen as tlie place of tlie next meeting. It was moved and carried that the surplus funds for next year be appropriated to some special home field in North Carolina. The convention was interesting thronghont Thanks are due Pastor Ritchie, tiis flock and the people of Winston-Salem for tlie kind and hospitable manner in which they entertained the members of the convention.

Cy Watson. Tlie Jolly Boys Debating Society met last night at tlie pleasant home of T. P. Styron. Tlie subject for discussion was the candidacy of Messrs.

Glenn and Watson for tlie United States Scnatorsliip. The debaters were Frank Stith, Luther Martin, Charles Styron and Henry Masten for Glenn, and Tom Rot brock, Clyde Elkin, Sam Barbee and Irvin Fulton, for Mr. Watson. The judges were Misses Carrol and Barbee and Mr. John Fulton.

The judges decided in favor of Hon. R. B. Glenn, and stated that ha ought to be elected. Elegant refreshments wers served, and all present enjoyed a very pleasant evening.

NEXT WEDNESDAY NIGHT. F. Griffith and others. West Salem school now haa a systematic graded course mapped out and those who complete tills coarse are given a diploma. Thia diploma admits girls into tlie Freshman class in the Academy and into tha Junior class in the Boys' School. It also gives a thorough common school education.

The school thia year will have additional equipment in the way of charts, maps, globes and dissecting blocks. A considerable outlay baa been made in tha purchase of this additional apparatus. Tha building liaa been thoroughly renovated. The teachers are allwell equipped by education, experience and broad minds for tlieir respective grades. FOR CORONER.
