A few leas observant people are hitinring under the impression that Wiu-stoti-Kalcm is now, and haa Nmu for several years, at a standstill. TIiomu who are iu touch with our most progressiva citizens are aware of tlie develoieinent which is in store for the future of this city and its people. An encouraging sign is tlie nqiort of tlie tax lister for 1909 iu the three wards of Winston, a summary of which is seen below Tlie figures for the white projier-ty iu all three wards aliow tliat, in 1901 it was 91,180.784, while iu 1909 it was 94,689,561, allowing a total increase of 9481,181 during the past year.

In tlie former year tlie colored property amounted to 979,870 and in 1909, it was 981,098, an increase of 95,008. Tint total gain in tlui pnqierty of both races during tlie year is 9408,887. Prof. J. F.

Tlie list allowed improvements last year to the amount of and this year 94,080, being 95,985 less thi year than last. Anotlier reason given forMaloiu's loss is insolvent credits, several parties having listed iu otlier States. Prof. Bower says there would have been an of 941,000 over last year had all of the money invested in other States remained lie re.

C. A LEMLY PresUen' JS. A. GRAY. Cashis the quest ion, and while their efforts were jwrtially it lias only been iu the next ten years tlist a practical machine lias been put ou the ma: ket.

It seemea like an iuims-sihility that any combination of machinery other than that encompassed iu the human body could pa rate nearly a hundred character, pick them up ugain, form them into word combine the word into xenteiices and plara them iu reodine for that olih-r but none he less marvelous result of brain tlie modern printing pn-HM. Tlie Simplex doe it, though, and doe it five or ix time fast a tlie most rapid compoxitor. It was easy to make mistakes iu the old way. An would slip into the box or a into the box, lint the Simplex can make no such mistake. The ojainitor can, mid doubtless will, continue to make mistakes, but they will lie fewer than liefore, mid the hnrilKhip of the imofruader will be ennxidoiahly lesseued, andt he senxi-hilities of tlie critical newspaper reader shocked lew frequently tlmn before.

It would lie almost an imwwibility to give au a curate dcM-rii ion of thi wonderful machine, anil tlie only way to get even a faiut idea of its ixxibilities is to come mid examine Ha working. Wo publish a picture iu this issue, which is accurate a far ao general apjiearmice go, but of raurse gives no idea as to liow it is ojNratod. The Simnlex typesetter UMt-s just tlie same kind of tyie as is net fay hand. Each individual tyie has a Heparate combination of nicks or notches cut on the edge, mid on this fact is based the fundamental principles of the machine. As will be noticed iu tlie iictura, the hotly of the Simplex uoiixists of two letters into a line iu their pnqwr order, in an upright jNisition, or, to uxe a printers nfiraxe, xtaiuling ou tiieir feet.

A long line of tyw rapidly formes iu front of the nrarator, mid wlien he has enough for his purMixe who liirl his diair around, and wtth small instrument called a grab climates enough from the long line to make a line the measure lie fs setting. This he justifies or spaces, and then takes auot her line and so on. Wlien two persons am working at tlie same time one operates the keyboard mid the other does the spacing. As Siam a one line is miaced it is automatically pushed back to make room for another and at the same time tlie matter i leaded if ao desired. After the machine is once in ojieni-tion all that is ueceswry in the way of distributing ia to place a galley of dead type ou tlie side of the upir cylinder in a place pretwred for it.

It does the work jiorfeotly, and while it is apmrantly simple it would he impossible to explain the matter intelligently so we wont try, hut again invite self. Tlie Simplex is small and compact, weighing about 11,00 pnuds, and occupying no more floor siwca tlmn an ordinary coal stove and while it 1 took brains ahd lot uf them to invent it, it is of remarkably simple construction and not at all liable to get out of nqiair. We liave had it in cqie ration only a couple of day, but that ia long enough to discover it true worth, and every time we sue it work, with a 1 moxt human intelligence, we feel I like taking off our Imt in its presence. It is certainly tlie best and most wonderful machine tliat ever graced a jirinting office. INTERESTING TRIALS.
