A-16 PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1998 Memories of C.S. Lewis vivid for stepson Stories vary in shooting by police SHOT FROM PAGE A-13 father figure. It wasn't until Davidman was dying that she and Lewis realized their love for each other. They married and their love blossomed during her four-year remission. "I saw them walking in an almost visible incandescent glow of their love for each other," Gresham said.

"I quite deliberately stepped back, knowing I wasn't a part of it and shouldn't be apart of it." After she died, Lewis and Gresham helped each other through the grief. At 18, Gresham grieved again when Lewis died. Gresham speaks in the exacting manner of an intellectual and frequently talks about following God's will. His manner vacillates between being stern and impishly contrary. He hates newspapers.

Never reads the lousy things and rarely grants interviews. He says his life wouldn't change a bit without He's not a numbers guy. He can't tell you how many copies of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" or other Lewis books have sold. But he is now and forever a devotee of C.S. Lewis, a Christian writer who has occasionally been criticized for smoking and drinking.

"This is a classic example of how many Christian sects have accentuated the trivial at the total cost of any belief or understanding of Jesus Christ. It's very sad," Gresham said. "He was a man who wore shabby old tweeds, often with holes in the elbows of his jackets. He paid no particular attention to his own happiness, health or welfare. He had gotten to the state of Christianity where the health and welfare of people around him were more important to him.

He lived that way, and that's Christianity. Drinking and smoking have nothing to do with it." child abuse to eating disorders. Gresham was born in New York City, but his mother moved him and his brother to England after her marriage failed. She and Lewis became good friends. As an 8-year-old boy who grew up reading about the wonderful world of Namia, Gresham was disappointed when he first met "Jack," the nickname for C.S.

Lewis. "When you are 8 years old and you are about to meet the man who is on speaking terms with High King Peter and Asian the Great Lion, you kind of imagine a tall, stalwart figure dressed in armor carrying a sword. And of course Jack wasn't anything like that at all. He was a stooped, professorial, balding gen- tleman in middle age with very shabby clothes dotted with cigarette ash and with long nicotine-stained teeth." But it didn't take him long for him to like Lewis and later love him as a Johnson testified that Bloxson bent to scoop up the weapon and was running away in a hunched over position when he was hit. Johnson also testified that he didn't think that Bloxson had picked up the gun before he was shot.

Feller, 25, who also has been a police officer for 18 months, testified that he saw Mincin draw his gun and then he saw Bloxson standing next to the car with a silver object in his hand. With the gun in his right hand, Bloxson then pivoted away from the car, which brought the barrel of the weapon closer toward Mincin, Feller testified. At that, point, Mincin fired two shots, Feller testified. Feller said he felt so threatened he would have shot Bloxson if Mincin hadn't been in his line of fire. Mincin was advised he didn't have to testify but he did so anyway.

He said he was shocked when the gun fell onto the sidewalk and Bloxson reached down to get it. "I said, 'Stop! Don't move. Don't do it. Don't pick it Mincin testified. Bloxson was standing but bent over with his hand on the gun when Mincin fired, Mincin said.

None of those four versions seemed to fit perfectly with the forensic evidence. Bloxson was shot twice in the right side of his back. The fatal bullet entered near his right armpit and lodged near his left armpit. That shows Bloxson likely was sideways to the police officer when the bullets were fired, forensic pathologist Shaun Ladman testified. Also, the path of the fatal bullet was perpendicular to the ground, indicating Bloxson and Mincin were both standing or both kneeling when the shots were fired, Ladham testified.

families long for lawsuit to end LEWIS FROM PAGE A-13 artwork in books and theatrical spin-offs of his stepfather's 61 titles. Lewis wrote the acclaimed children's book series, the "Chronicles of Narnia," as well as a science fiction trilogy, numerous books on Christianity and other works. Lewis' popularity keeps growing after his death 35 years ago, especially this year, the centennial of his birth. "It's been nonstop since beginning of the year," Gresham said. "That is why I am starting to look frayed around the edges.

Gresham pumps money from his speaking engagements and salary into his nondenominational ministry in Ireland, 60 miles south of Dublin. He and his wife, Meredith, open the doors of a 13-room mansion to those wanting Christian-based counseling and therapy. They treat emotional traumas rooted in everything from pregnancy loss to Flight 427 CRASH FROM PAGE A-13 Sept. 8, 1994 crash will be issued about a month after the hearing, attorneys said. Once the report is issued, Stan-dish said, he would schedule a trial within the next nine months.

He was fixing up a house on Franklin Street in WilMnsburg and had a construction job. His girlfriend, Eboni Winston, 23, testified that some in Wilkinsburg considered Bloxson a snitch and had threatened him. Bloxson got a gun, but it wasn't registered, which was a parole violation.

Those testifying yesterday gave this account of what happened shortly after 11 p.m. Sept. 25: Bloxson was in a car driven by Winston that had stopped in front of Blox-son's house on Franklin Street. Bloxson, Winston and Darnell Johnson got out. Police pulled up.

Mincin and officer Alan Feller got out. They had noted that the car had an expired registration tag and ordered everyone to get back into the vehicle. Johnson and Winston did. Bloxson didn't. Instead, Bloxson dashed from his front porch to the car, reached in and pulled out a backpack.

A gun fell out of it onto the sidewalk. But Bloxson's two companions and the two officers gave different versions of what happened next. Winston testified that Bloxson bent down, stumbled a bit and seemed to reach for the gun but did not pick it up before Mincin opened Bloxson was crouching when the bullets hit him, she testified. "From what I saw, he never picked up the gun," she testified. Cont.
