B-5 0E1TUM1IS CLEVELAND AMORY JOSEPH MELL PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1998 Longtime Stowe police officer Author, satirist, avid conservationist i' J- ivy-' A 'if- frr eration of paramedics, Mr. Mell had to bear the injured or dead on stretchers when he responded to an emergency call. That lifting put a strain on his back that ultimately spelled the end of his career. But while Mr. Mell was in his prime as a police officer, he had enough strength and energy to run his own upholstery shop on the side as well as work part time at a bottling company.

After retirement, Mr. Mell passed the time campaigning for local Democratic Party candidates and fishing in Lake Erie. He spent several years living near the lake, but returned to Stowe in 1990 and went into the VA hospital several years later. In addition to his son, Mr. Mell is survived by two daughters, Leslie Ann Wokutch of Robinson and Rosemary Homer of Stowe; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Anthony M. Mus-manno Funeral Home in Stowe. Mass will be celebrated tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Mother of Sorrows Church in McKees Rocks.

By Jonathan D. Silver Post-Gazette Staff Writer While still a teen-ager in the 1930s, Joseph Mell started a career as an upholsterer. Several years later, he picked up work at a brewery. And around age 40, he settled into his third and final occupation: a police officer in Stowe. There he stayed for 22 years, until he left the force in 1978 with a bad back.

Mr. Mell, the father-in-law of Stephen Homer, the current Stowe police superintendent, was neither the longest-serving nor most highly commended Stowe officer. But he is remembered as a solid, well-liked, rule-abiding patrolman who once trapped a would-be bar burglar by locking him in the freezer into which he had crawled. Mr. Mell died Wednesday of coronary artery disease at the VA Medical Center Aspinwall.

He was 82. The second-oldest of eight children born to parents who immigrated to Stowe from Italy, Mr. Mell did not finish high school. Instead, he began working as an upholsterer. recalled his brother, Rocco, 74, of Windgap.

He married his first wife in 1939 and was divorced two years later, said Joseph C. Mell of McCandless, Mr. Mell's son from his second marriage. Mr. Mell joined the Navy in 1943 and spent a year as a mechanic at the naval shipyards in Philadelphia.

After being honorably discharged, he worked at a brewery, hosing down beer vats. In 1952, he married Olga Fedinko, who became a Democratic committeewoman in Stowe in the 1960s and '70s before her death in 1987. By 1956, Mr. Mell tired of the brewery's damp conditions and his incipient arthritis. He was wooed to join the police department bv several friends already on the force.

When Mr. Mell started as a rookie a year before his future son-in-law enlisted he was a radio carman, an officer who was paid a $10-per-month differential because he drove in a cruiser instead of walking the beat. Over the years, before the prolif- By Tom Long Tne Boston Globe Cleveland Amoiy, the Boston Brahmin who bit the hands that fed him in the classic satire "The Proper Bostonians' before turning his attention to animal and wildlife 'conservation, died in his sleep Wednesday in New York City. He was 81. "The Proper Bostonians," first published in 1947, is now in its 29th printing.

It gleefully relates the foibles of Boston's aristocracy, such as the time firefighters arrived at the snooty Somerset Club to douse a fire and the steward directed them to the tradesmen's entrance. Or the letter of recommendation a Boston law firm sent for a job applicant to a Chicago bank: "Lee, Higginson could not say enough for the young man," Mr. Amory wrote. "His father, they wrote was a Cabot, his mother, a Lowell. Farther back his background was a happy blend of Salton-stalls, Appletons, Peabodys and others of Boston's first families." The Chicago bank sent back a curt acknowledgment: "We were not, the letter said, "contemplating using Mr.

for breeding purposes." When Mr. Amory's book first came out, many Bostonians were shocked at having the skeletons in their closets aired. They called Mr. Amory "Boston's Benedict Arnold." With typical understatement, Mr. Amory admitted the book "was not wholly satisfactory to the inmates." In a story published in the Globe on Sept.

24, 1997, he said his favorite reaction was from a member of the Somerset Club who said: "What would you expect of an Amory who pronounces it 'Amory' instead of In the late 1960s, Mr. Amory returned to his childhood interest in animals. In 1967, he became founder and president of the Fund for Animals, an international organization designed, he said, "to root out the unthinking cruelties built into our way of life" and to relieve the fear, pain and suffering of animals everywhere. He went on to become a member of dozens of humane societies and to serve on the boards or as advisers to a half-dozen national and international ones. He also wrote a widely syndicated newspaper animal column called "Animail" because it answered questions received in the mail.

He was the author of "Mankind? Our Incredible War on Wildlife" and two novels, "Home Town" and "The Trouble With Nowadays." In 1987, Mr. Amory's "The Cat Who Came for Christmas" became a best seller and led to two successor volumes, "The Cat and the Curmudgeon" and "The Best Cat Ever." Mr. Amory was a television commentator for "Today," "Open End" and "CBS Morning News" and had been a regular columnist for Saturday Review, TV Guide, Town Country and McCall's, among other publications. Mr. Amory was born in Nahant, Mass.

He was brought up in Milton, and was a graduate of Milton Academy and of Harvard College in 1939. He started his writing career as a reporter for the Nashua Telegraph and then The Arizona Daily Star, after which he became managing IKUO IKEDA 1961 pnoto Cleveland Amory editor of The Prescott (Ariz.) Evening Courier. Then he became the youngest-ever associate editor of The Saturday Evening Post. During World War II he served as an Army lieutenant with military intelligence in Washington, D.C. Mr.

Amory was a director of the Humane- Society of the United States, the National Catholic Society for Animal Welfare and the New England Society in New York. He was a member of the Harvard Club of New York, the New York Athletic Club and the Hunt the Hunters Club. Of the Hunt the Hunters Club, Mr. Amory said: "Our position is simply this: We want to do for the hunter what the hunter does for the animal shoot him for his own good! Now, I admit that some hunters are so shortsighted they don't realize we're doing this just for them. It must be made clear that hunters are breeding like flies, overcrowding the fields, damaging the forests.

But our club isn't trying to exterminate them; we're just trying to trim the herd." He leaves a sister, Leonore Sawyers of Claremont, Calif; and a stepdaughter, Gaea Leinhardt of Pittsburgh. Popularized American baseball in Japan The Associated Press Ikuo Ikeda, who used his family's publishing company to popularize American baseball in Japan, has died. He was 58. Mr. Ikeda, the president of Baseball Magazine Sha died of liver failure Monday in a Tokyo hospital, his company said Tuesday.

An avid baseball fan, Mr. Ikeda foresaw the popularity of American players at a time when few Japanese could pronounce their names. While heading his family's publishing company, Mr. Ikeda interviewed American star Reggie Jackson for its magazine, Weekly Baseball. Mr.

Ikeda also helped make baseball cards popular in a nation that had not heard of them. Baseball Magazine Sha executive Yoshiaki Sato said American baseball was largely unknown in Japan when Mr. Ikeda compiled a book on major-leaguers in the 1960s. "Back then, what divided the major-league and Japanese baseball was bigger than the Berlin Wall," Sato said. Mr.

Ikeda's publishing house was intent on covering American stars, even though early efforts were barely profitable. Since then, with Japan's Hideo Nomo and Hideki Irabu playing in the U.S., Mr. Ikeda's company has launched another magazine, Major League, and has no problem turning a profit.
