MAKE A GOOD START COLLEGE B.ALL PLAYERS 8UR- PRISE THEIR BACKERS. Team Has Triumphed Over Obstacles Which at the Time Seemed Almost Insurmountable. Houston Fojt Special.) COI.LEOR STATION.

Texaa. April 11-The aplendid showing thus far made by the A and M. baseball team has brought pleasure to every follower of the game at College Btttfon and at Bryan. The pleasure has been keener beeauae of the fact that the success of the team has been over obstacles that seemed Inaurmounta-tde. In the beginning there were only a few of the old men back, though the outlook for good new material waa promising.

Then came the strike, which scarcely left a remnant of the prospective team. Huff, one of the reliable pitchers, resigned on account of sickness. Dabney went to the Galveston professionals. Then hoc Kelley, the captain, left college. Bo when Coach Spencer finally got the fragments together he had one lone outfielder of last year's bunch to begin to build up a team with.

Spencer is long on cheerfulness, however, and he went to work. He has in a month's time out of raw material built up a team of which the entire college community is proud of. He has found a really high-class pitcher In 1 reshman Ma mln, though the pitching staff Is yet short a couple of men. No better work was ever eeen here than the performance of Hnrbtn yesterday when he pitched twenty Innings, allowed five hits and at ruck out nlxteen men, and played an errorless game The entire team, moreover, played ball like veterans. Thus far the team has broken evenly with the two strongest college teams in Texas the Htate university and Texas Christian university.

They held down the Waco professionals and they whipped Southwestern soundly. If the boys can play ball away from home as well as they do here they will close the season among the leaders. Even should they lose pretty often from now- on the college will continue to admire the grit and pluck that has characterized he men on the team in the face of conditions that would have excused carelessness and Indifference.
